Just wondering if any of you have put a different gearbox on a 6n2 GTI and what sort of options there are?

I've heard of putting a 1.8t Golf mk4 gearbox on but how complicated is it?

depends on what kind of enginecode you have. (ARC /AJV / AVY)

ARC is delivered with an 085 gearbox mount, only option is to fit a G40 gearbox without modifications.

Other option, which i've seen in germany, requires a lot of modifications, is to fit an 02A (Golf/Corrado G60) with an adapterplate between gearbox and engine.

disadvantage is that you'll need to modify the driveshafts and place another flywheel and clutch.

Because the 1.8 golf gti does have a gearbox with a 02 mounting this isn't gonna work out of the box.

The Lupo GTI with 6 speed gearbox does have a 02 mounting, which can have the Golf GTI gearbox without any modifications. (i think its the AVY motorcode)

Lupo GTI with 5 speed gearbox are the same as a polo GTI

Gearboxes are all too complicated! Why on earth VW ever thought the GTI gearbox would be a good idea I don't know.

have the same issue as you .. broke the gearbox twice... with a little help from a added turbocharger, but as default not capable to handle the basic power.

Problem is the extra attached 5th gear.

I've heard that the axle with the 5th gear starts to rotate when you shift into the 5th.

so it gets a lot of stress when shifting in high revs.

So your still running the standard gearbox?

I'm planning on upgrading the lot, I'd love a turbo :p but I daren't run the box!

yes, running the 085 ETG gearbox, with some G40 gearbox parts added, don't know which because someone else refurbished it for me :)

do have a 02a atb gearbox for future plans
