1.8t gearbox option ?

Featured Replies

So maybe I'm being dull and over looking something, but... We fit lupo gti engines into the polos , running an 02 box, why can this box not be mounted to a 1.8t engine , thus solving one of the mounting issues, and letting you have a 6speed on the 1.8t ?

Bump before I end up buying a box just to see if it fits...

I think people might be a bit confused by the question. The 5-speed and 6-speed versions of the 1.8T transverse gearbox are basically the same gearbox, and many if not most 1.8T engines came with the 6-speed version.

But then you talk of the Polo. Which never had a 1.8 engine with or without a turbo (until the 9n3 GTi of circa '06), and the Lupo GTi engine is a little 1.6i and a completely different engine as well.

So basically you're making no sense whatsoever. At least to me. What's your point?

the lupo GTI gearbox is a different bolting pattern

I think it was easy enough to deduce that I was talking about a 1.8t conversion into 6n or 6n2...

So the 02 code 6 speed box from the lupo has a different bell housing pattern to the 02 boxes from say a golf ?

The 1.8t conversion into a 6n or 6n2 has already been done quite abit check the build threads

Well then you just use a 1.8T 6-speed gearbox, don't you.

And no, the grammar was so bad, plus the omission of putting a 1.8 in a Polo that never had one = other factors being just as obvious (just because there's room between the 02 gearbox and chassis rail for a little Lupo engine, doesn't mean the big 1.8T will fit there for a start) and pure mind reading was required.

Tell us what you want to do, and then maybe we can help.

Apologies for making assumptions. I've read every bit of 1.8t conversion information going and it surprised me that nobody has mentioned the lupo box, because its my understanding that it is smaller than a golf box, the golf/Leon/Ibiza/polo 9n 6 speed box is huge, and I was looking for a way to utilise a 6 speed box without cutting the chassis leg.

I'm very sure they're fundamentally the same unit, they appear the same and the 5-speed can be converted to 6-speed (though for the hassle, why would you bother). The pressed steel end plate on them is big enough to eat your breakfast from, twice the size of the one on the Polo's 085 gearbox.

Various detail differences from one to the other, clutch release mechanisms vary etc. But fundamentally based on the same unit i first saw in a VR6 in the mid '90s.

Tall block engines of the time were using an 02 gearbox with a little round end plate. Some of the cheaper medium cars used this until around ten years ago (Golf4 1.4 16v, some 9n's, etc). Was only a 5-speed but was very wide due to a rod release mechanism for the clutch being mounted on the end of it.

My car has an 085. The wife's has the later 02 unit in question (5-speed version). So i'm in a position to measure the difference - but as the 1.8 lump is wider too that won't help you. You're only gonna know what you need to do when it actually comes to fitting it.

So what i think you need to do is re-title this topic to 'FAO 6n/2 1.8T owners' and tell them what you want to do - ask what gearbox they have, what subframe, and what body modifications. Then hope someone answers and gives you enough for you to make a decision..

I know you cant mount a 6 speed lupo gearbox to a polo 1.6 16v engine so it may have the same mounting areas as a 1.8T engine... I'm not sure about that tho

Even if it did fit, I see no advatage to using it.. the gears arent designed for a turbo so you'll be changing gears before you know it

Plus I'm sure the box wont handle the power

Its highly unlikely for you to be able to use a 1.8T 6 speed gearbox without a chasis leg cut

Unless you mount your engine very low in the bay which isnt recommended due to its size

There arent really any advantages to having that extra gear apart from maybe better motorway cruising

Also with he 5 speeds, there are so many gearbox codes with varying gear ratios that you should be able to find one best suited for you

Thank you for all your responses, after lengthy conversations with a few friends the idea has developed, why make extra work that isn't necessary, I shall instead be starting with a 9n polo, a little petrol that has a damaged engine, and working with a base that will actually accept the engine to start with.

Thats fair enough. Makes light work, i bet a 9n3 gti loom would plug and play?

There was a thread about this a while back, and I popped the question, similar to Mikey.

If you can fit a 02x box to the Lupo; you can thus fit it to the Polo using OEM mounts, since they share the same sized chassis rails.

Yes, the 1.8t block won't fit next to it, but by how much?

If you can bolt a 02 box onto the rails, you can then use the Lupo shafts. All you need is a drivers mount, right?..

You understand what I was getting at... If you could get the lupo box in oem position , you'd be laughing.

But you can't get the gearbox in the oem position with the 1.8t engine as the engine is alot longer

So mean mean chopping the drivers chassis rail majorly just to fit the gbox in the standard place

Which is why the question was posed in the first place ! For the information you've just provided, gained from the experience you have of putting a 1.8t In.

i haven't done a 1.8t conversion but I picked up a lot of that info just from other things

I've not read all this thread so if this makes no sense sorry haha

02S gearbox out of a sharan will fit without any chassis mods, they're just like rocking horse poop to find for sale
