People just freeze when this happens, like their responses don't work or something. In the early '90s a customer drove his MK1 Fiesta in a circle all the way around a motorway services car park before ploughing into another customer's Montego. Well back then various crude devices to hook your steering wheel to the pedals etc were popular because cars were so easy to steal. He'd turned the ignition on first and it fired, then foot off the clutch in panic and it was off - he stamped on the pedal but the brake pedal was locked, the only pedal available to his right foot was the accelerator..

I asked him why he didn't just let go and yank the handbrake, he said he just panicked - pressing as hard on the accelerator as he could in an effort to stop the car.

It explains a lot of these crashes. Like the one where a pensioner plughed through several gardens before ploughing through a cul-de-sac and into another house, then a couple more gardens before finally being stopped by driving into a swimming pool.

When he was fished out by the local wannabe lifeguard, he was asked what happened - he went into drive instead of reverse, and the shock made him freeze with his foot pressed on the accelerator as hard as he could, of course trying to stop. You'd think that after about four bird tables, five greenhouses, seven fences, two washing lines and a barbeque he'd have worked out that pedal wasn't working..?

But no, it's almost common, like some sort of phenomina. Complete loss of bearings.

Would the owner then not loose all the 'power' functions i.e. power steering and assisted breaking?, putting it into neutral would be best i think

Aha! The cars fault? Not going for that one unless she drove a Decepticon off of the forecourt. How it occurs to the human brain to go into blind panic and shut off every sensible sensory response I do not know.

Insurance paperwork will be interesting though; something about 2 attempts to demolish a house and scaring/injuring children whilst writing off a Highlander in the process and then trying to blame Toyota for it entirely... xD
