Stuff adds up, a decent set of valve train & pulleys is around £1500-1600 when i priced it up.

You can always get cheaper things, but there's obviously reason why management such as Omex or emerald or KMS cost more than the likes of megasquirt.

^^^ That's true to some extent but with certain things it needs financial investment.

Take throttle bodies and standalone fuel for example. A decent ECU and wiring harness is around £600-800 then add in mappable ignition it's over a grand. Then a set of 40mm Jenveys are another grand.

I'm all for making things and doing as much as possible by yourself, but sometimes it just isn't possible.

My ITB set up with omex management cost me about £300, not everything has to be brand new

I was watching it and thought about putting a punt on it but then decided I want the new K6 emerald management

cheer's yeh i had the filters on at the pvw shoot, build wise £1000 ish for inlet manifold, jenvey's, and linkage gubbins, schrick cam's were £700 iirc , omex ecu harness and mapping came in at £1400, not cheap but worth the look when your pushing stuff out the way.

Daddy's home - this puts most of the Berg AFH motors to shame, which says something.

Steel bottom end, and no doubt hardly any original valvetrain left, Believe it makes peak power (218bhp?) at ~ 10,000rpm, a road engine it is not!

Reading Nick (Dogwood's) previous posts on Club Lupo & Club GTI, AFH valvetrain seems to be good sub 8,000rpm - as per Mitch's engine this leaves you somewhat short of 200bhp, even with a 1.6 bottom end.

I'd forget 200bhp - it's not cheap, and if it is, it's not reliable.

Jez proved years ago a 1.6 AFH was a nice base conversion, since then people have done various different takes using the same block/head combo.

heg123 Has a nice setup (although for rallying) with a set of Schrick cams, headwork, and bike carbs, similar spec to Mitch's Lupo I think.

I'd put time and money into a nice 1.6 AFH running on ITB with a set of Schrick's mild(ish) cams for a solid 165/170bhp

Would sound the tits too 8-)

Single port wasn't massively good on AFH inlet from Jez's experiments- best go direct port, and get a couple of bottles, big ones.

Anyway, has anyone actually had decent quantified gains from headwork on the AFH head?

Dubownerwilco had a fully rebuilt head that was port and polished by a reputable company.

He did not seen a huge gain with this headwork, re profiled cams, bike carbs, 4-2-1 ect, but i don't know much more about it.

Maybe the carbs weren't set up the best and the benefit would probably have been seen more on efi or itb's

I now own that cylinder head and it will be going on my next 16v engine build along with some schrick cams.

The port and polish looks good, i want to compare it to my other head to see how much has actually been taken out but it seems like quite a bit.

Excellent work - I would suggest you use the word condescending, but that would be ironic, and I'm not sure if you'd understand.

I’m not trying to be a idiot (or a nice person) it comes naturally, I have been practicing recently though.

I know mate, i've been hiding away about £70 a month for a while now to save for some, whilst keeping my eyes peeled on german ebay for a second hand set.

Cat cams do some too slightly cheaper and piper do the re profiling

I'm really just not convinced with this reprofiling shit haha. just dont seem to work as well

I'm yet to decide on using the regrinds I (think) I'm getting, or purchase a schrick kit. But then it's do I get cams, or solid lifters etc too?

They are expensive - if 5+ people are interested they come down from 630Euro to 535Euro (£225/cam) which ain't so bad.

Tis a shame why Bilco never got to the bottom of his before he split it down, in theory should have been good but who knows.

I think iv decided on a spec to begin with at least anyway.

Make sure you put it on Mk2 ignition too! Preferably the old stuff with nasty points. :lol:

I didn't know they did group discount that is worth knowing, if a few of us wanted to purchase at the same time.

The kits caught my eyes too, they do lifters, spring, oversized valves.

Suppose it depends on how much you want to spend, how much more power it will give you, what you will be using the car for (daily, strip or track) ect ect each to there own i suppose.
