Aston's Polo 6n2 GTI

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Thought id start a build thread, and show you all what I've been upto. This ones nothing special really. I feel like the silver GTI's are a bit "Boring" but its my daily and I'm going to keep tweeking it until its something special.

I bought it last September for the grand sum of £800. It had a broken gearbox, a badly dented passenger door and the paint was (and still is) pealing off of the rear bumper.

All standard, and all present. Full service history and 80k on the clock.

First thing i did was to sort the gear box (It was actually close by when i bought it, so i crawled it home in 2nd gear down all the country roads)

I got a 2nd hand gear box and had it re-conditioned. And whacked it in all with in the first week of owning it.

After that it basically stayed standard and as it was until after Xmas.

My January pay day came and i started to order some bits to sort it out. First and for most a set of AP coilovers....

The standard RX2 wheels have seen better days (my brother had a 6n2 GTI and his wheels had peeled the same too, i think this is common on these) but all my spare cash was going into other cars... So i stuck with them and just got it low for the time being.

Next on the list was the ICE. I'm not into BIG installs, but do like some decent sound quality. I'm more of a believer that a setup should be "heard and not seen"

I spend a decent wedge of cash on some component speakers front and back and installed them into the door cards so as to look factory.

These, teamed up with a touch screen double din DVD player i had gotten for xmas made for the setup (With a small amp and 12" sub in the boot)

The sub, i feel is too big at 12" for this size of car. and is currently just loose in the boot in a sub box. I plan to buy a good quality 10" sub at some point and build it into the sides.

Come February, it was time for a good service. So that was all done, with a timing belt, new plug, HT's a Pipercross panel filter and some fresh oil!

Id taken it to the Club Polo RR day a few days before this, and i do wonder how much of a difference a good (and over due) service would make to my read out on the day!

Since then, the only other major thing I've done is the brakes. When i got it, it had, what i thought was black Calipers (the GTI's come with red ones) i looked into it thinking this was some change in the year it was made or something, but it just turned out that the previous owner had not liked them in red and had painted them black (i found this out when i took them off and only the front half was painted black)

The brakes were all stripped, the calipers where sand blasted and given a fresh coat of piller box red. I've fitted drilled discs all round with better pads and also got my hands on a set of goodridge Braided brake hoses with the Zinc banjo ends (so they dont rust up)

Bleed the system and the pedal feels great now!

Fitted a momo team 280 with a snap off boss! :)

I've also started a bit on the body work. Just debadged the rear tailgate and removed the wiper.

And I've just (3 days ago) fitted a set of Porche Teledials with some stretched bridgestone tyres.

AND THATS IT SO FAR!!

LOADS of plans for the future! Including:

Find new passenger side door (or fix the current one) as it has a proper bad dent that i dont think will be fixable.

Respray the rear bumper. (thought about smoothing it while i was at it, but not really my cuppa tea on 6n2's. I quite like the strip)

Smooth the rear handle from the tail gate (I've already bought the popper, just need to do the body work when the sun comes out!

Find some de-locked handles.

Paint the roof black

Paint the pillers black

Paint the centre of the teledials Red :)

Id like to look into a few more tuning mods as well. Mainly a 4 brand manifold and straight through exhaust. But i dont want anything hanging out the back end. Wont to keep it looking subtle and Factory(ish)

Might look at chipping as its nippy already but i feel like there are a few more ponies in there i can ring out! But i dont want to compromise MPG to much as, like i said, she is just a daily.

A few pics.(will take her for a photo shoot when the suns out)

Enjoy! And thanks for reading. Its no ground breaker, i know. But its a bloody good daily and a good bit of fun round the corners on the country roads!

:)

How it was the day i collected it...

Another bit of an update,

So I've spent a few quid on it again, got a new rear bumper and passenger side door (fitted the bumper, gonna do the door at the weekend)

And i also got a new smaller sub for the boot and all the wood from B&Q to make the boot build. So i have a busy weekend ahead!

Got up this morning and decided to give her a wash, then a wax, which then lead me to start detailing under the bonnet. Ended up on my hands and knees with a tooth brush and a bottle of de-greaser.

Anyway. A few pics for you all as an update. I'm starting to go off of these Teledials. i think 15s look a bit small? Maybe i need to just drop it a bit more.

TODO:

Drop suspention a bit more

Boot build (I'm gonna try and do one on the left hand side rather then on the floor of the boot so i still have some space)

Fit new passenger door

I want to book it in at a body asap for a black roof and black pillars.

And I've been talking to AMD about tuning/mapping and new exhaust options!

More soon, tell me what you think! :)

Just trial fitted some other BBS i had in the shed.

I bought em a few years back and never touched them since. They are BBS RX2 but are the 16" ones. They are actually from an Astra Coupe editon 200. I've had the centres bored out and had them sand blasted. Might get these sent off for paint and rubber! :)

What you think? I'm kinda diggin 16's now for a 6n2 :) (makes the teledials look little)
