Perfect. Don't suppose you know if this is as simple for a mk1?

good question, according to the Haynes i have there ATE brakes on a floating caliper. (but VW may have fitted some with girling ones)

so you may need to fit the carriers from a mk2 golf/mk2/2f polo for the calipers to fit.

Hopefully one of the mk1 owners will clarify this

EDIT: can you take a picture of your brakes?

You need the carriers off the donor car to fit them on a pre 85 Polo, getting mk1 steels over the brakes might also cause problems.

Yeah, MK1 Polo steels won't go over VWII calipers without spacers. MK1 Golf steels look identical but have a deeper centre, and do go over VWII calipers.

8v or 16v ??

16v has 256mm don't they? Which obviously isn't a direct fit otherwise people wouldn't be using vauxhall brakes?

X2

The assumption here is that you're talking about brakes from an 8v, which are vented 239mm discs. The brakes from the 16v don't fit without carriers that are made of hens teeth.

It should also be added that the 8v set up can be found on loads of cars, not just the MK2 Golf GTi, i got mine from a MK3 Golf GL, Vento, Passat and even some 6ns had them. Common as muck really.

I dont have the brakes yet just getting an idea of what brakes i need to keep an eye out for.

What carriers would i need for the 16v 256mm discs and calipers.

sorry I'm not very knowledgeable about brakes.

There's a guide in the FAQ for 256mm brakes, you'll need 14'' wheels to clear them and people use Vauxhall calipers for this conversion.

i thought you needed 15" wheels for 256mm brakes ?

No

No

I've got a few sets of vauxhaull carriers and calipers, was going to give that conversion a go at some point. But don't think I will now. Somay sell them if your Intrested in them.
