There's no leeway, same for illegal tyres. If you get a tug, expect 3 points per defective tyre and a fine for no MOT.

NO, you can get it done upto a month early, so there's no excuse! When it's expired you can only legally drive it to the MOT station for a pre-booked test, if you get caught on an ANPR or plod without a valid test you risk having the car confiscated

The above is very very correct.

You see once your MOT runs out you technically have no insurance as your vehicle is no longer fit for the public highway.

What you need to do is find a test station ( I would strongly advise you local council MOT centre cos they are non profit ) that does not charge the test fee until the vehicle passes the MOT.

That way if it fails you get a 14 day window to carry out repairs.

I have forgot my mot in the passed and was drivin around for 5 months without one but my head was not in a good place as i just lost my dad..

My dad used to wait a month every year so after 12 he'd have had a 'free' MOT (old people eh?). This was in the days before all the surveilance and you'd probably get let off. Things are different now. You're watched all the time and it seems no lee way is given, even for a genuine mistake. You could take the risk, but it's your neck/licence/arse on the line

Not entirely true, your car should be fit for the road at all times, a car can pass an MOT and then the next day have a crack along the windscreen. Thus making the car unfit for the road and voiding your insurance.

Some policies clearly state that you need a valid mot during the length of the insurance but alot dont, have a look on yours. Thats why alot of the time the police will let you off with a fine, and not take you car for having no insurance, Because its not always invalid. (they still have the power to take a vehical without MOT though)

I've done this a few times by accident, fortunately didnt get caught out by the rozzers, think mine was 3 months gone last year due to shear dozyness! Its not worth the risk tbh

Well wile we are on the subject, my coupes comin off the road in next 2 weeks doing a full engine rebuild:). My mot is up mid june and insurance renewal round about same time! So how would i stand with a new policy? Getting it to an mot garage?

Oh great stuff thanks for the info bro:), i just thought with insurance you needed an mot as it wouldnt be roadworthy? But if i get pulled over by the fuzz onthe way aslong as i can prove its going for an mot it should be fine!

They will more than likely pull you if they have got anpr and its starts bleeping.

They will probably ask you to prove that you are heading to an certified MOT station, ususaly calling the station you are going to confirm a booking. Remember to take the most direct route.

Yeah ill have the mot station on speed dile:) well where the coupes going to be when its having a rebuild, to wear the mot station is its about 45min drive so its either back streets or strait down motorway:) thanks for the replys bro you been most helpfull

most people take the test early then if it fails on that test the old certificate is still valid so have the time (4 weeks max)to get the work done with out it being a shock if you leave it till last minute then have to do it immediately

Almost but key facts are still not privided,

You MAY drive your vehicle to a PRE-BOOKED mot centre without tax and test meaning the garage must be made aware the car has no tax and test.

I am not nit picking this subject is very serious these days unlike when I first started driving you could pretty much get away without tax test or insurance for years on end.

Basically get it tested as soon as you can all it takes is a copper in a bad mood or a pcso with spring in his step and a cape on his back and you could loose your car or at best a few hundred quid in fines and recovery/transport...

You would be wise to ensure that the MOT station make a note of your registration number as then you will be able to prove it was booked in, should the need arise.

Penalty: Fine of up to £2,500 (if the vehicle has 8 or more seats), £1,000 (otherwise). No disqualification, endorsement or points can be awarded.
