Just saying a hi and showing you my "new" (got it for about a month and a half) crisis-car/toy, a 1991 Polo G40.

I'm in Hungary, but it seems to me that the strongest Polo community is over here, so I registered...

Got a couple of questions in general, as I was and still am an Audi and Mustang guy... will put them on in the right topic.

Started to blog about the car, as I really didn't find any sources that is about "what to expect" from this car.

No pictures yet... I think I made 3, but of course will do.

At least I got one of the most important things... :-D

The car is all original in general. No accident damage, original (and faded) paint, refurbished g-lader, new brakes, lowering springs, polyurethane bushings all around and some surface rust.

I'm on a tight budget, as it supposed to be a "crisis-car"... but have some projects in mind.

- 15" wheels... Speedline Turbines or Fire and Ice wheels with 195/50 or 45 tires... but might end up with black 14" Snowflakes

- Changing the unknown lowering springs to FK 40/40s

- Fog lights... if can find used, as the new Hellas cost over 140GBP apiece over here

- Interior light upgrade as seen in Malaga Red's topic

- Surface rust repair (for MOT, this June), and the hood might end up black (or "carbon fiber" - any opinions?), done with self adhesive film, as it is pretty faded... much later a paintjob

Things are going slow, but have new wheels.

I made some before and after pictures. The car had white 13" steel wheels with 165/70 tires. There is no problem with the rear, but put the car on the side of the road so the right rear was in a hole.

Got a set of 14" Scirocco Snowflakes (silver with black inserts). Now it's with 185/60 tires. There is rubbing on "hard potholes", so the fender job will be done next week hopefully.

These wheels are gorgeus... I think. The "Clio 16V Speedline project" is left for next year.

You need to get 185/50/14 tyres to be the correct diameter on the G40. I have the same wheels on my mk2 :)

I know, but I'm going for 15" wheels, and will have 195/50 15s... (had a moment thinking about 16"s... and not completely dropped it)... my speedo cheated a lot with standard wheels (according to the GPS), so the 185/60s are almost correct.

Finally got my car back. Have new MOT, and Golf Mk 1 arches front. The guy who did the arches made a pretty impressive job... and I won't be able to wipe the smile off from my face for at least a week

Doing the Mk1 arches needs a perfectionist... it seemed straightforward to me. Almost an easy fit to the first gen Mk2, but fitting to the Mk2F needs time. I wanted it to fit next to the bumpers almost perfectly. It took the guy 2 days to fit'em... but definitely worth it, I'm still smiling.

Gonna get some "during the fitment" pics to give you some ideas.

I'm really really really happy with the result.

Just to add, the Golf Mk1 arches are way bigger than the Polo's... My car has a 40mm drop and now it seems almost stock. Will make better pics (these are made just after I brought the car).
