Got a few plans for it. First and foremost, sort the horrible ride! It's so low and firm it just bounces down the road!

I have an LPG setup I could transfer from my audi cabriolet, Just debating whether it's worth it! It's surprisingly economical. Done about 40mpg on the way back. My GT doesn't do much more!

Any idea where VW sourced the 5-cylinder from? As far as I'm aware this the only car they ever fitted it to so I doubt they would develop an engine to use in just one car. I doubt it's that Ford/Volvo unit.

Audi coupe MK1

It's an audi engine yeah. Same as fitted to the 80/90/100/coupes of the era. Rocker cover even has a huge 4-ring logo on it.

Underneath it's basically an estate version of the B2 audi 80/90 (audi never made a B2 avant)

5-cylinders were fitted to T25 and T4 busses as well.

Had the interior out today to give it a vacuum. Disappointed to only find 78p in there. :(

Turns out these will take the same seats as polos without adaptation so that should hopefully help me source a new driver seat. (interior pattern is the same as C/D reg mk2 coupe S's and rangers) Failing that, some corrado seats.

Double check your measurements on the seats, when I tried to put typ85 coupe seats in a rocco, the rails were too far apart.

I got my tape measure out on the runners and they were about 18" apart which seemed to be the same as as the runners on my red saloon. I have some g40 seats in the boot at the moment (7 seater! ) that I'll trial fit tomorrow :)

Still waiting for a few more. I may have gone to town a bit! because the suspension that's on isn't even from a Passat I've had to basically buy every nut and washer to build up the suspension legs from scratch just in case there are some bits missing from the Car. I nearly have everything to fit the rears but I've ordered new upper springs seats for the front from vw heritage and they've got to come from Germany.

Tonight, Matthew, I will be un-lowering the rear of the passat...

I might have overdone it!

Turns out the rear upper spring seat rubbers are missing so I've gotta wait for the golf ones to arrive and hope they fit. I'm currently using a metal upper spring seat from the front of a mk2/2f polo to keep the springs off the body. These sit in the lower part of the top mount in place of a normal washer and they seem to jack the ride up a bit! :-s

Also realised today that the bolts look to be the wrong type for the wheels. They're tapered rather than radiused, which I'm fairly sure is highly dangerous!

Leave it like that. Looks cool man :)

It did look awesome but I just couldn't live with it like that. It wasn't lowered properly. When I took the front struts off the other day, there was about 4 inches of travel where the spings were completely uncompressed. It was a similar story on the back.

My classic insurance only allows 50mm of lowering so I've gone for a h&r 40mm kit. The ride height at the back is just temporary. :) I'm hoping it looks alright when its done but it will look like it's 'on stilts' compared to before.

They do seem to be proper rare beats now, finding spare panels etc isn't going to be easy. There's lots of interior trim that needs renewing. The roof lining for one.

It's quite 'busy' in my back garden isn't it! I am hoping to trim the fleet by the end of summer to 3 or 4 cars (currently got 6 and occasionally a 7th when I have a work's car)

Will do - Funnily enough, my driver's seat fabric came out of a Passat that had been in a hedge for a very long time. There was someone on here breaking a coupe S like mine (1987ish, Red, no pin stripes, because it's actually a Coupe C with all the boxes ticked

The seats are exactly the same down to the frame, the only difference is the Polo one has a tilt handle mount welded on, the relevant plastics and cables to the hooks (if you look under the back of your front seats, you'll see the hooks just the same as a Polo, just with no cables on).

Strange really that Golfs and Jettas have bigger seats than Passats.

It is a bit mad yeah, to me they look and feel exactly the same as polo seats. Scirocco seats seem to me like the way to go. You can get them in the same colour and pattern too, on similar age GTXs. Bet there's not too many of those around anymore either!

It pre-dates most other mk2s, it's very much mk1 golf inside, with a hint of mk2 polo so I guess that explains the seats more than anything, the others hadn't been invented yet! Still, you'd expect something to have changed by the time they did the midlife facelift, the dash, for example is made of card (The top part) which I haven't seen on a car since a mate of mine had a mk1 seat Ibiza. Never thought I'd see such a thing on a VW!

I have found a guy who's hoarded a load of passat B2 parts, he even has a complete car that's off the road in need of major work that he's in two minds about breaking with the same seats as mine. He's got some other good stuff too like all the bits needed for electric windows. It'd be nice to have electric windows with there being so many doors! :) I just need to take a trip down to rugby soon for a look at what he's got.

It's the big stuff I need so I'm gonna have to get down there, I guess it's surrey way? I heard there was one in another scrapyard in that area (something the previous owner said, I got the car from redhill) So hopefully there's one or two round here. :)

I've been slowly progressing with the car over the last few days. I've found I've needed to replace half of the front suspension components, track rod ends, CV boots etc. I'm slowly getting there.

This has to be the easiest car I've had to work on with regards to front suspension. There's no tension or weird geometry angles like the polo when it's jacked up. So things can be separated with ease, ie getting the wishbones on and off is an absolute doddle.

I am struggling a bit for parts availability though, even though the front end shares everything with the B2 Audis (of which there's still loads about) I've had to go to a specialist to locate a set of drop links. These are probably the only bit on the front suspension that are gonna be 'a idiot' to change as they're pressed through the wishbones. Time will tell, they should arrive next week.

Much better! Not sure what to do about the rear. The parts from vw-classic are a few weeks away and I want to go to deva dubs in it next weekend. I might end up re-fitting the coilovers but winding them up a bit. Should hopefully make it less 'bouncy' than it was.
