I have VW Polo MK4 (after facelift) with RCD 200 Radio/CD in it and both the manual and the internet clearly claim it is able to play mp3. The manual even goes into detail on how to arrange mp3s in folders to achieve desired playing order.

However, I already tried recording 3 mp3 CDs (one CDRW Vervatin 700mb and two CDR TDK 700mb - manual claims this is exactly what is supposed to be supported) and every time the radio complains this is not an audio CD and ejects it.

Does anyone has an idea what could be going on?

The RCD 200CD MP3 only plays "Sony CD-R" discs that are "data" CD

Have tried several discs, Maxell,ASDA's own and this "Sony CD-R" disc plays only in both of my polo's (2007 reg)

I think that these CD players are made by Sony for VW, that could be the reason for this strange happening.

I tried the Maxell disc in the Sons Fiesta and it played!!

Has any tried others makes to see if they work.

Interesting. I'll try to get Sony CD-R then. Could you give more details on the CD-R that works? Maybe a cover photo?

By the way, was there two version of RCD 200: with and without MP3 support, or was there only one that supported MP3?

My googling has been inconclusive in that respect.

The one I had played them fine, I don't remember exactly but I think when you burn them you have to make them a data disc instead of a music disc if that makes sense?

Also, I'm pretty sure the radio itself is made by blaupunkt, but the mp3 laser drive may well be made by Sony, so this could explain it.

You mean it played Sony CD-Rs ?

I think that if you record an mp3 CD, it automatically is a DATA cd.

I don't remember as I only tried when the car was new, and I no longer have it. I don't think they would have been a Sony cdr, as I don't remember ever using them, as I usually use unbranded ones from work :)

What I do remember is that when I burned them, it gave two options and would only work with one but that was windows xp, so win7 and 8 probably don't ask anymore.

Have you tried a lens cleaner? Could be dirty?

Also, not really answering your question, but may be of help. These stereos have a CD changer input, so you can get an aux in or as I had, an iPod interface. As well as steering controls, hands-free input and amplifier outputs. I found it a lot easier to use the iPod through it as the np3 features confused me.

I don't use Windows but Linux. Besides, the CDs work in everything except that radio.

I am not sure about the lens being dirty, because all Audio CDs are being played just fine.

The CD changer input could be a solution, but I don't think I want to take the radio out and then play around with cables. Unless there is some tutorial online on how to do it. I admit AUX in would be good to have.

If you search for blaupunkt aux in, there should be a few tutorials about, but searching for the Vw radio want really get anywhere :(

It is pretty much plug and play really. If you get the connector here and some removal tools from halfords etc, then you just pull the radio out and and plug this in. You will need an adaptor from rca to headphone jack, conect this to the adaptor and then push the wire through to under the steering wheel or centre console etc pull throught then refit the stereo.
