changing a gearbox

Featured Replies

how difficult is it to change a gearbox in a 6n2? I'm interested in one in the area but the gearbox needs changed by the sounds of it. reverse and 5th are a bit 'sticky' it says? have a look for yourself and see what you think. EBAY

i know the listing has ended but I've spoke to the guy and its still for sale. I've just always fancied a 6n2 and this is at a bargain price.

cheers for any help and advice :-)

Easy job IMO but I'm a mechanic lol, depends how competant you are?

Hopefully better with spanners than i am at spelling

I done it on my drive just take the front end off but just watch out for the a/c

take the front end off? why? lol.

remove batt + tray, clutch cable, reverse switch plug, harness which is clipped to bolts

starter motor

linkage off box

engine steady

driveshaft bolts - it will come out without taking bottom ball joints out but a bit awkward, so may pay to undo them so you can pull the hub out a bit more

gearbox mount (hold engine with jack or a crane)

4x bell housing bolts

^, this.

It's easy to do, remove the passenger ball joint though. It comes out like Nick said, but getting the shaft back in is a coont, so just do that and it's easier.

Trying to lift it back in on your own is really not that easy, so find a strong mate.

Getting it out is easy, getting it back in ends with loads of swearing.

only bit i struggle with is lifting it back into place ...you will need a decent jack and a helper if possible

You can't really go wrong at the price!

If your luck is really in (I don't normally have that sort of luck) it COULD be that it just needs the linkage sorting out and some oil in the gearbox!!

Regards.

In that case, you forgot something as well..?

I can't remember now haha.

I don't think just do when it's in front of me.

Clutch cable

Bell housing bolts

Steady mount

Gearbox mount

Starter motor

Inspection plate

Driveshafts

Linkages

Reverse switch wire

To get to shit you have to take the batt & tray out

Harness which clips onto some of the bolts on a 6n/2

Bottom ball joint for driveshaft room

Meh probably something obvious lol.

I usually undo the speedo connection at some point, saves dragging half the dash along behind me whilst carrying the old gearbox away..

Haha minor, who has them connected anyway? Just adds miles?

PMSL :D:D

Hopefully get mine back tommorrow with a working Gearbox.

Last month I replaced the clutch and saw how easy it would be to remove the box IF you have the right equipment ie, Jacks, supports, friends, tools and some knowledge.

But I gladly paid someone else to do the gearbox exchange :D oily hands and banged up knuckles in a cold Garage not on my agenda TBH.

Hi, when I'm putting the box back in i use this method. (on the deck anyway)

If you have a friend... put the box under the car and have your mate reach through the engine bay and lift the gearbox up by the clutch lever, then slide your trolly jack all the way to the back of the gearbox under the diff casing and sit the gearbox on it, then get your mate to come down under the car and support the gearbox at the 5th gear end, jack the box up and slide on.

If you have no mates... Get the box under the car and lift the box up by the top of the bell housing and try and get the jack under the diff housing, this can be a struggle on your own but is doable. Then use a side jack or scissor jack to support the 5th gear end and jack them up together bit by bit the slide box on easy, well its took me a lot of 085 gearbox changes to get this right and a lot of swearing but works every time now.

Haha love the with and without friends methods.

If you struggle, get two old bell housing bolts, cut heads off, cut a slot in them, like a screw.

Screw into block, then you can slide the box onto them, locates the input shaft into the clutch nicely, stick other two bolts in. Then use a screw driver to remove your new locating stud things and bang other bolts in.

Tbh isn't really necessary on one of these as they're a piece of piss, but helpful in other cars which are a pain in the arse to line up

If you have a friend..Hide any beer you have else you'll wake up in the morning with a hangover and your car in thousands of pieces.

If you have no mates...

Then take your time with a couple of beers as you work.

Edited for truth!

Beer & friends is productive

I used the miss's for the with friends method once haha what a mistake that turned out to be

Unless she was supplying food or bringing you beer = doing it wrong

I wouldn't touch the clutch lever when installing the gearbox because of the risk of pushing the release bearing too far up the guide sleeve and having it pop off the clutch 'prongs'. The worst part is you won't realise you've done it until everything is all back together.

I've done that before too

Its easy to avoid if the release lever has the external return spring fitted :-)

Is it any different on a 1.4 TDI 6n2?
