yet another afh hybrid question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a few questions, mainly with the head as the engine I got already had the bottom end done :)

Firstly, when I took the valves out I managed to lose one of the collets. Does anyone have a part number and rough prices. Do Vw even sel singles? Or do I need a whole set?

Tappaets. I took them all apart and cleaned them out, but again I managed to loose two springs and the little ball, so that's two of them wrecked.

Are the afh ones the same as the 8v engines? And if not, does anyone know where the cheapest place to get them is?

Timing belt, can someone plesse show me the right procedure for refitting it as I cant figure it out.

Also, I have found a stainless manifold for the AUA engine, will this fit?

Sorry if these are dumb questions but it's the first 16v engine I've took apart.

Thanks

It does all sound a bit Frank Spencer tbh..

Tappets are not the same as 8v, I think someone wait they might be the same as the KR engine, but I don't know, that info is forthe search engine.

Whilst you're there, there is a guide here somewhere on lining up the timing marks, I wrote in it about how I hold the pulleys in position with an M10 bolt.

For new parts, just phone TPS. Stuff for AFH engines has always been a bit hit and miss with pattern suppliers.

Sure someone said that the tappets are unique to the AFH.

And I'm not sure about the collets.

I have spare tappets though - cause I bought a spare head..

Thanks guys,

I did search for info on the timing and found similar diagrams. Thanks nige.

I should have been a bit clearer.

What I'm stick on is how the cover fits on? I had to remove the pulley to get the belt off as I couldnt see another way.

From what I can tell, the cover has to go on first, then the pulley, but with the cover on, there is no space to adjust the tensioner. Usually with the 8v engines the aux pulley is bolted to the crank pulley, but this is in one piece.

If I'm just being thick here, plesse let me know.

You're right.

Although, that pulley shouldn't be one unit, they should split..

I did it with the bottom pulley in with the bolt semi-tight, enough you could turn the engine over with it. Belt on, tensioned and then cover on. Remove the bolt (with a tap from a hammer and spanner), then alt pulley on, bolt on and tighten..

I did that too adam

Lol, I literaly just figured this out and the answer is right here. :) I saw the little indent on the outer face of the pulley and though, this must come off, so a whack with a hammer and what do you know.

I was totally stumped on this. I though it was a bit srange the pulley was one piece, something you would expect on a renault.

Also, does the crank pulley part stay put when you pull the bolt out?

Thanks guys

Fuck you and your anti-Renault propaganda!

Yeah it should stay put enough to do what you have to do, its snug fit on the crank so won't just drop off or owt when you take the bolt out

It'll stay put, the tension of the belt holds it in place.

I wouldn't go swinging from it though.

I tension the belt with the aux pulley bolted on.

Means I have to use a spanner instead of a torque wrench though, but my guesswork on the tension required on an M8 nut is pretty accurate - as long as I haven't had a couple of coders by then

Lol thanks guys.

Nothing against renaults, they are great cars... Until they go wrong, then its barbeque time :)

Yegh i test fitted the belt today and your right the tension holds it in. Il try not to swing from it, but I cant promise anything, like you say. If I have a couple before hand then anything can happen :)

Also. I have found a nice manifold going cheap. But it's from an AVY. Would this fit? As its a standard AFH on the outside?

Also, I bought this engine without a loom or fuel rail. I notice that the inlet manifold has magnetto marelli stamped into it. The car this is going into is a 1.6 AEE which also uses MM electronics. Will I be able to use the ecu if I 're arrange the existing loom? Or is it totally different?

Thanks guys.

Exhaust manifold? No, ports are way too different.

AFH manifold is good. Just a bit heavy. And doesn't clear the VW oil cooler, if you wanted to fit one.

Use your existing ecu? Nope. It probably would run but the maps ect would be all wrong for the engine. You'll want afh ecu/throttle body/injectors ect

you might be able to get away with using your loom but having never compared the two I have no idea how similar they are

also remember to get the immobiliser set up with the ecu unless you have the means to reprogram the ecu to match yours

Yes, sorry the exhaust manifold.

So it woukdnt be any good ? I don't have the standard one as it wasnt included. Would any other 16v manifold work? Ie AUA/B?

also, I wasn't planning inusing the oil cooler. Is ther any benefit in using it? Odviously it will help cool the oil if its hotter then the coolant, but other then that? As I'm not racing this car just maybe the odd bit of fast road use.

Thanks buddy.
