Recently I've been very tempted to purchase a mk3 Golf VR6 however I've never actually been in one and I'm not sure if they're worth the running cost. I've seen them shoot down the strip at Santa Pod and the soundtrack is something to behold but are they all they're cracked up to be?

The whole reason is because I want something fast, I love my breadvan but don't really know what to do to get much more out of it. It is a 1.3 AAV SPI, has the usual decat, 4 branch exhaust manifold and GT cam. Is it possible to Supercharge it without killing it?

Forget the AAV dude, and forget the VR6 BIG TIME.

I traded my 160bhp eaton G40 for a 220bhp Shrick tuned VR6 highline a few years back. What a complete turd of a car worst move i've ever made.

It sounded incredible yes but at what cost? 8mpg when you floor it, and not much more when you cruise. It was much MUCH slower than my G40 (or rather felt it). Those VR6 engines were designed for fat lazy men to cruze around the motorways at 80 and then brag in the pub at the number of cylinders they have while chomping back pork rinds and scratching their tiny penises. A very very restricted, lazy, slow revving, thirsty unfit scrapyard of an engine. The only way i can see anyone having any fun with a VR is if they Turbo'd or S/C'd it, and then go check prices for parts for a VR6. Insanity.

The only good thing i can say is that it handled well (although anything with a tonne over the front axle is bound to grip) and it was well spec'd.

If you're looking for something quick the first car you should rule out should be the VR6, save and buy a G40, or go jap, or even something two wheeled.

Also must add, the MK3 Golf was a poor poor car. They rust from the minute they left the factory (i've owned quite a few, and a Vento) and the electrics in them are absolutely pathetic and with the VR being a high spec car, everything is electric (and won't work intermittently). Stay clear!

You can turbocharge the AAV to a safe 6psi but it will take a bit more. there are topics on this around the forum.

Vr6's are slow.

My 1.4 afh on carbs used to piss all over them at pod lol ..and on moterway

That was 130 bhp.

I've drove one and was disapointed. Such a overated engine, The potential is there but like dazza said if you've got bucks to go forced induction

I was looking at them to replace a 2.5 litre Toyota Camry V6, and found that next to the Toyota, the Golf had utterly nothing going for it.

I would love to get my hands on a G40, one of the attractions of the VR was how cheap you can pick them up. The G40 is a bit out of my rice range although I like to think it will happen one day. I have looked and boosting a VR is quite ridiculous, for that money I would get a G40. I've been tempted by FTO's but I would like to keep to the dubs, haven't been on the scene long but long enough to know its a great scene with lots of knowledgeable people like yourself who are willing to help.

A decent bit of boost then, would an Eaton M45 do the job? Seen a lot knocking around on eBay for a few hundred quid.

Ouch! Driving slow for a measly 30MPG doesn't seem worth it and I would imagine that with such a nice soundtrack it'd be hard not to boot it everywhere.

What has happened to this place? I used to be pretty much the only one to be giving factual opinions of the mk3/VR6, now it seems everyone has woken up to how shit they are

Unfortunately I can't say anything that hasn't been said, I made the same mistake as dazza but I swapped a mk2 golf 16v for one and instantly regretted it. Other than the noise everything else on the VR was a let down compared to the mk2. The VR was probably faster at motorway speeds, but motorways are for fags anyway.

Exactly, the Toyota used to average 33mpg, and that was with London traffic 5 days a week and a blast north every Friday. The 1.6 manual Escort is replaced only did 35mpg under similar circumstances.

If you can find a decent enough mk2 16v in your price range I'd suggest one of those instead. Handle better, feel quicker and are better built. Great fun on a roads too and you seem to want to keep it vag so its a no brainer, its a car every vag enthusiast should try at least once imo. Loved driving mine so much, only swapped it because of how people on vw sites used to bang on about the VR's

I've had a look at a few mk2 16 valvers and it wasn't easy to find a good one. Had a go in one and it was slower than my breadvan :/ Was the golf a shitter or is my breaddy great :) lol

If I found a good 16 valver it would be tempting but like I said it's not easy. Most of them look like a Halfords bomb went off inside and I do prefer the look of mk3 breaddy or coupe.

I had a VR6 Golf and it was one of the best cars I've owned, all you lot can fuck off The fuel bill did put me into debt though.

They will never feel fast like an old polo does, because they were purposely built as a more refine cruiser. It's not cos they are slow But they are not as fast as they COULD be
