So my polo saloon 6k (which has the same dash as a 6n) never really liked to switch from full to main beam but worked often enough to pass the mots. Now it's hardly ever working and I'm thinking of checking the relays by buying a 2nd hand one at the Bristol show today.

Any idea which relay is the right one???

Otherwise I'll be checking the loom for faulty connections next week, before the mot :(

The switch on the stalk works as it switches to dipped beam But doesn't turn the high (flash) beam on...

This sounds to me very much like a combination (stalk) switch fault, or maybe a connection from it.

X2 the switch may well click but the contact inside could be dirty and bot making a conection. But I think the signal also goes throught the light's switch. The relay is before the lights, so has a lot of power going through the switch, it's a silly design by Vw really.

The power comes from the battery, to the ignition switch (X contact) to the main lighting switch, then to the stalk switch and onto the headlights via the fuses, there is no relays involved, so the contacts in the stalk switch take the full current (yes stupid design!!) and thats why they fail

I've never needed to do so, but it wouldn't take up too much time (once that you have the switch sorted) to fit a relay so that the switch would only then carry the relay coil current.

Yep, it's deffinarly better to run a relayed harness.especially with the polo setup as the wiring and switches will decay and fail quicker. Not to mention the output would be way better as the current doesn't have to go on a road trip before it gets to the lights.
