Amars Canyon Red Open Air.

Featured Replies

So, , I'm Amar :) passed my test in October 2010 and first car was a 1.4se Memory Red 6n, brought the car when I was 16, done the usual, kamei front grille, lowered on TaTecknix coilovers, Brought brand new Lenso bsx's  sadly in july 2012 it got written off and scrapped, it was rotten anyway and I had already brought the open air so it didn't really matter to me that she got killed haha :-p so I put everything onto the open air. this first picture is of the first polo in its prime ... :-(

image_zps420d66f7.jpg

interior:

6n2 gti seats retrimmed.

6n2 gearknob and gaitor trimmed

trimmed handbrake gaitor

momo team280 and snap off boss

exterior:

lowered on ta tecknix coilovers

smoothed jacking points

6n2 rear lights

matt black vinyl wrapped B pillars

6n2 roof strips

6n2 stubby mirrors

shark fin aerial

polo 6n2 gti splitter

15x7 and 8's Rial Cobra alloys.

oh and both rear quarters and lower doors rattle canned

image_zpsb5c9fa31.jpg

not too long later brought a set of oz turbos In 15x7.5's all around.

image_zpsf27e9064.jpg

and she died

and this is what the open aired hit road like..

image_zps1d7db840.jpg

a Friend of mine Harry Durrant painted the old 16v bumpers off of the first polo and bootlid for me, and went straight to HTS Motorsport for a notch as it was sitting on the driveshaft..

also Cleaned the wheels right up and fitted 2" dishes on the rear

Sadly, the day before Westside2012, was mopping the car, and put 3m Bluetape along all the joints and seals etc, car came up real good, took the tape off, and off came the laquer too! :-( was really bas in most places but heres a picture from the show anyway :-p

image_zps1a509211.jpg

so decided from this day on she needed new paint! so started pulling off all the necessary stops that needed to be done if the whole car was going to be painted.

drove around like this for the winter

image_zps1b07e569.jpg

pulled the arches and made way for the 15x9 oz's  and yes, these were pulled with a jack poll, baseball bat, a big fat sledge hammer

image_zpsa3b3b2a3.jpg

along with smoothing..

front plate recess and top vents

rear bumper toe eye cut out

petrol flap

door handle recess's

side repeaters

washer jets

and the body shop done the aerial, rear seam joint lines and jacking points :)

8am, the work day has started, which means the build thread is continued :unibrow:

The 15x9 in the above pic was kindly lent to me by a friend of mine who also is building a polo to watch out for probably in 2014 ;)

so, as I was needing to buy 3" dishes, the 2's went up for sale.. long story short I came across some smooth wings for sale so said to the matey ill take them when I sell my dishes, he asked "what dishes do you have", I told him and he replied that he was also looking for 2" dishes, so he said he'll give me the money on top with the wings when he sells his smooth bumper, I said what smooth bumper do you have, he told me and what turned into me selling the dishes, lead to a deal of me swapping my 2" dishes for..

-boot with badge and handle smoothed

-front bumper with plate recess smoothed

-wings with arches rolled super flat and side repeaters smoothed

-a single drivers side 16v rear light

-a pretty mint open air roof

-open air interior light and surrounding

-a central locking pump

-a mint 16v rear bumper with number plate lights

probably a few extras I've missed out tbh

The deal was done with a guy called Damian who is now a pretty good mate with me so yeah there you go.

the wings were the only body panel near completed that I didn't have to do any work on, however the bumper cracked and the bootlid needed quite a bit of filler etc so from the cold Christmas months of 2012 right up until the end of March 2013 I spent my days in the garden or the driveway sorting out the unfinished business, some days in the rain, some days in the snow, but hey ho :x

The cracked bumper ...

image_zps92fd6418.jpg

image_zps4d05c476.jpg

I was going to get a mate of mine Will Smith to sort the bumper for me, but I hate the feeling of it being someone elses work, and I would of never learnt if it wasn't for trying, so decided to start the repair myself!

so I dug a little deeper to get right down to the crack itself..

image_zpsca10d505.jpg

plastic welded up using pieces from an old 8v bumper kindly donated to me by a mate of mine called Nick, a soldering iron, and a militant Heat gun I borrowed from work :-p

image_zpsae8e7f35.jpg

the bumper also cracked along the top of the plate recess, I don't have the picture of the initial crack but have one after being plastic welded :-)

image_zps0806898c.jpg

sanded down..

image_zpsd684edb4.jpg

applied some fibre glass resin, famously available at the local Halfrauds..

image_zpsf4a14bf4.jpg

sanded down the fibreglass..

image_zpsae926a67.jpg

and after messing around with some P38 filler, also from Halfrauds..

image_zps38d8bd1c.jpg

fitted the US markers, don't want to talk about it, what a ballache it was ! :finger:

image_zps991cec62.jpg

as I got confident with the plastic welding, fibre glassing fillering etc, I thought ide give the rear toe eye a shot!

welded in a plastic cut out from the old donor bumper...

image_zps76dedbef.jpg

welded from behind too...

image_zps1d632a26.jpg

sanded down...

image_zps9cf2ce06.jpg

fibreglassed...

image_zps4fc51b85.jpg

sanded down the fibreglass...

image_zps918938d9.jpg

and a skim of filler...

image_zpsb0d2a489.jpg

et voile!

image_zpsebaf6d67.jpg

With all of this, I thought fuck it, might aswell do the top vents too!

mocking up..

image_zpsa76c9f49.jpg

pieces cut and tacked with masking tape into 16v bumper...

image_zpse927e7bf.jpg

after they were plastic welded, I then fibre-glassed up and sanded down...

image_zps20743f6c.jpg

after some filler and more sanding...

image_zps06bcf2a5.jpg

As I thought I'm spending all this money on the Respray, and all this time doing the bumpers etc, I might aswell push the boat out a little further and do the rest! so I got a mate of mine 'Matt the welder' :unibrow: to come and weld up the door handle recess's and washer jets for me  I don't have many pics of the process this is all I have..

bonnet being welded up...

image_zps9966699b.jpg

door handle recess fibreglassed over plateing...

image_zps461cd277.jpg

door handles recess in filler...

image_zpse778f314.jpg

door handles sanded..

image_zps54f20bcd.jpg

petrol flap welded and fibre-glassed over...

image_zpsb882361d.jpg

and some filler

image_zps72936638.jpg

must say I hated rolling around like this for those few months .. :finger: :finger: :finger:

image_zps922f2d80.jpg

old open air roof out!

image_zps5d0f2132.jpg

old wings removed and removed a headlight to try out the Powerlooks the Mr's got me for Christmas

image_zps4d3a4b68.jpg

new wings and smooth bumper fitted, looking better already if you ask me!

image_zpsc153188f.jpg

The car is staying canyon red as I actually like the colour dude :-) the wheels are now different, the car finished and has been out for a few weeks now, but I've finally decided ide make a build thread so I'm slowly getting towards the end but will have some pics up of the finished car hopefully today

Nice to finally see a build thread on this. See you at ace cafe alot. Top work! Respect for doing it all yourself, most people down londin way seem to just get their wallet out and give it to a garage then take all the credit lol

Break times over :ninja:

I've got some pics from building the wheels too so thought ide put them up :-) I wasn't feeling the polished anymore, as ide ran them throughout 2012 showseason and just generally wanted something different!

my initial idea was to go with matching the centres to the leathers, I kept on changing my mind about this but I thought believe in going with my instincts, so I done it anyway  Haps managed to get me some 3" dishes and 120 gold bolts for a steal from Germany, and kindly donated me what he thought was about 40 nuts, but ended up being 120 on the dot, so new nuts and bolts all round for the oz's

wheels split, washed, degreased, and keyed with 600 wet and dry, as they're already bare metal al they needed was keying :)

Ran into some problems with paint, it turned out that the laquer on the car was real bad, which meant more work.. Jake from Joe90 rang me and said he can paint the car and mask the window seals etc, but run a rick of the paint peeling within a couple of years, but either way all laquer had to come off the car. so I gave him the go ahead to remove the windows and strip all the laquer off of the car, imo its better this way anyway as the paint will be all behind the windows too so will be no risk of paint coming away from any edges at all!

BACK IN 45MINS WITH SOME PICS FROM THE PAINTERS.

Awesome 6n bro, nice to see people are still toying with 6n's as they seem to be going a little scarce.

Good work.
