So basically I want to get a polo soon and I'll be 21 in a month, so what would be the best way to use my car for work? I was thinking probably a pizza delivery job or courier (If my car will be big enough). If anyone else has any other ideas they would be greatly appreciated!

Why does your car have to be the main part of your job?

I used to do pizza delivery and a bit courier work in my polos, in both my jobs i've found my polo 6n big enough for most items.

First off you NEED the correct insurance for delivery use as social/domestic/pleasure/commuting and 'normal' business use won't cut it if you get a pull and the police will take your car as well as 6 points and a fine if they find out you're not insured correctly, ignorance will get you nowhere because once you start driving for a living you become a 'professional' driver and you should know better.

Next keep on top of maintenance nothing screams as "pull me" more than someone driving around all night with a light out or getting spotted getting out of your car with pizza bags so any vehicle defects will get spotted easily when the police do an inspection, minor defects like a bulb out and you'll end up a warning or a VDR, major defects carry points and a fine or even a probation notice which will ruin your night and require you to fix the problem and get it through a full mot, also a unreliable car will lose you work.

Efficiency is key as excess fuel consumption and wear and tear will cut into your profit.

Hazards, courier work is relatively safe but a pizza delivery job can be very dangerous as assaults muggings are very common, I've had a few incidents where i've been mugged, been threatened with a knife and swung for, although it's not easy let them take it as it's not worth getting stabbed over £20 worth of pizza, just get back to your car and call the police and get your boss to put the address on the banned list so no other driver has to go there again.

and remember the customer will blame you for everything especially if they are drunk or on drugs, a calm attitude and good customer service will minimize the risks i mentioned above.

If possible use the companies van as you won't have to worry about wear and tear, insurance and fuel.

When I was at Dominos they had their own insurance. Or so they told me.

It's 100% not worth doing.

Usually 21 but there can be exceptions.... most courier jobs are driver owned anyway.

Usually 25 in my experience for courier jobs.

I work at Dominos part time on top of my day job in a bank, and I net about £8.50 per hour. My gross is of course much more but that figure is basic pay after tax less diesel cost and inclusive of delivery money and average tips earning.

I'm on £5.41 p/hr working in a bar so that'll be and extra third.

You'll have to ask them.

The age that you can drive a companies car/van varies according to company some are 17 (very few now) 18, 21, 23, 25.

In the next few years i expect there will very few companies that will allow under 25's to drive due to insurance costs.
