Hi I've lurked for a long time but I've joined to ask what would you do ?

I've been looking for a Polo for some time and never really found anything that fits, I want a 6N2 nearby that needs some work doing to it that falls into the "cheap" bracket.

I've found one that pretty much fits the description nearby it is a Polo S 1.4 16v 3dr Dark metallic grey with 120000 on the clock. 12 months MOT, Currently SORN.

It needs (viewed it this afternoon)

Both windows fixing

Central locking fix

Two new tyres

Airbag light sorting

Cup holder is snapped

Wing mirror switch needs replacing

Clutch is slightly high

Brakes had alot of travel ?

It had a few advisories Useual stuff corroded brakes drop links etc

Interior exterior was tidy, Didn't make any Knocks or bangs on the test drive. Engine was smooth pulled well Brakes had alot of travel they did stop tho.

So he wants £650... I think £300 ( I'm tight)

I dont think its worth it and id like a second opinion what would you do ?

To be honest if your looking for a "cheap" car your only ever going to find one that needs work.

I reckon it will be around £500 to get it looking tidy.

I get that I'm looking for something needing a bit of work, But is it too much? I'm unsure and I definately let the what if's get in the way.

If your gunna do the work your self and the abs light doesn't turn into something really costly I would be happy to pay around 450-500 quid mark as long as the body works good

I just brought a 6n2 with 90k miles on it for £600 and the clutch was described as 'high' then a week after having it the gearbox went and £500 to repair :( ha any way if you really want a polo for that money I'd suggest a 6n you can get a really nice one for £600.

But i prefer 6ns this 6n2 has only given me trouble!

Yep body work is very good, Only one Carpark wound, The service history is vague stamped upto 95000 The guy selling works in a garage and Says he did oil changes himself. cam belt has been done so has the pedal box.

Does the 16v have any common issues to be aware of ?

And are there any common places they rot, I know they are galvanised wheres the first place to go ?

See I've driven a 6n the Mrs has had one for 3 years and its only had the power steering pump go, but the gearbox is noisy and the clutch is high, she is just seeing how many miles it will do until it dies currently on 135000.

I dont like it... I do like the 6n2 it feels more refined.

Just spend a bit more on one that doesn't need as much work- it'll no doubt turn into a waste of time and money...and if those bits haven't been looked after- what of the rest of the car?! I doubt he'd go as low as 300 unless he was desperate. It sounds a bit hanging to be honest!

I'd save up a bit more for something in better nick personally. I'm all for doing things yourself (on mk1s, 2 and 3s may I add) but it's not as easy (imo) on the newer models.

Thankyou Charlie I've always thought its not what you can see but what lies beneath, The car doesnt have that owned by a granny no expense spared feel to it...

Yes Nigel don't remind me! I think whoever was designing the dash was being fired from vw so though on his last day he'd design it so everything was a cock to get to

On Matt's car we were fitting the loom for the CD changer, automatic headlight levelling sensor & wiring to the ABS control unit for the satnav

The 6n2 does feel more refined everyone's commented on how smooth the engine is on it. But I prefer less refined cars.

The polo however just felt so nice...

I"d give it a miss personally on the grounds that the lad works in a garage, but isn't getting the work done for some reason. It just doesn't sit right if you see what I mean?

Airbag lights can be easy to solve or an utter pain in the arse, but never anything in between.

Id have to agree with yeti. Owner works in a garage but hasnt fixed the problems? Either says the jobs are gonna be too pricey for his budget or he just cant be arsed/dont know how.

this... by the sounds of things, its had a one of those MOT's where they look at the exterior of the car and go "meh, doesnt look that bad... Pass."
