Hey folks

You may have seen my car in the for sale section here. It is a 93 Polo Genesis Coupe. I bought it from a guy who was selling it on eBay, wasn't the most honest of sellers and I soon found many things wrong with the car!! Was a little annoyed with my self when I got it home to find the various defects! A bit of history about the car then.

1993 K plate car with only 38k on the clock. The car was owned by 2 family members up until 2011 in which the car had only done 17k! It was then bought by someone who lived in the rip speed section of halfords. The car was unfortunately subjected to a poor attempt at a max power audio and neon set up. Blue LED's were fitted in the footwell connected to the dash lights dimmer switch! 6x9's in the rear with a Fli amp and bass box. Gear knob was a silver and tip ex'd colour and a dodgy Chinese head unit and Belkin thingy hung out the dash. It has trim missing along one side of the car where I guess the door has been resprayed due to a bump or attempted theft! Interior lights aren't connected up, rear demister doesn't work, fog light cables have been cut into and used to power an on/off switch for the audio set up and an old alarm/immobiliser needs removing from the wiring! Front passenger headlight has a hole in it and is best described as a mobile pond. Lastly the spare was flat.

So a little bit of work then!

Since buying the car here's a list of the work done so far.

I've removed the god awful audio and wiring for it and the LED's.

Started to remove the alarm

Given the car a good service. Oil, filters (air/oil/fuel), sparks, leads, dizzy, rota arm, coil pack

Cambelt and water pump changed and timing done

Fitted 2 new tires, all 4 are now the same brand and the spare is the original Michelin that came with the car!

Fitted a new passenger headlight

I've got a few bits coming for the car in the next few weeks/months

Parcel shelf

Gear knob

Fog switch

Glove box lid (I know the Genesis model didn't have a lid but I'm gonna fit one)

Full set of wheel bearings (only doing for piece of mind)

I've got the wiring to finish off/rebuild so I have all electrics working including interior lights and fit the various parts. As for the exterior trim I'm not sure if I should remove trim to have the car symmetrical or source new trim and refit?

Once all this is done the car needs a couple of very small rust patches doing and the lacquer on the roof needs redoing. The car will then be done!! Then comes the mods! This is where I need you guys' input!!

I was planning H&R 60/40 suspension, stage 2 subframe, ARB blocks and poly bushed everywhere. Now I'm unsure of wheels/wheel sizes and engine mods? Being a low mileage engine it's probably worth keeping! Any suggestions?

Anyway here are some pictures, let me know what you think but be gentle ha ha!

If you mean the bump strips then you can take them off with a heat gun mate, looks much better wthout them in my opinion.

Looks like a cracking wee car, electrical issues aside.

Better to be electrical problems than rust! :)

I've done some more bits today. Bump strips removed and need cleaning up. Also removed a couple of stickers from the boot lid. Wired up the rear demister and fitted a new fuse. Working as new now. My windscreen washers now point at the screen and all 4 spray! Even the boot spray works. Fitted a new ignition coil too, cost me £17 from fleabay. Unit was slighty different from the one fitted which I think is the original unit. Anyway had to buy some differents bolt and use nuts as spacers as the 2 coils were different. No worries, cost me a couple of quid. £17 for an ignition coil is cheap enough. Some pictures added incase others want the same ignition coil.

What's the easiest way to remove the old double sided sticky stuff. Soapy warm water is taking far too long!!! Anyone have some ways? Be it technique or products??

tar and glue remover, a plastic windscreen scraper and some cutting compound.

hard work but you'll get there! Either that or a "caramel" wheel from a bodyshop supplier which fits into a drill and rubs it off.

sell fudge wheels on ebay for a fiver used them on loads of cars of mine and work well

A little update. Wiring sorted/ripped out! Rear window demist works! Still! Have the rear fog to sort out. Rear wheel bearings and mintex shoes/cylinders fitted. Rounded one of the Allen key screws that hold the cylinder to the back plate wheel hub so had to drill that out but managed to fit a hex head screw with washer. Was a perfect fit! Now though the rear brakes are dragging ever so slightly so I'm guessing I need to adjust handbrake? Or will it get better after a few miles? Also fitted a a new distributor pack but couldn't get the car to fire up? I am pretty sure leads were correct and rota arm etc were fine? Duff distributor maybe? It's this one

Looking good bud ! . looks like you're making good progress to get it back to how it should be , just a quick question , I'm not sure if my demist works on my mk3 , does the rear screen get warm enough for you to feel it ? . my switch is there and lights up but i can't feel any heat . (noob question)

Not sure, I switched it on, left it on for 30 seconds or so then breathed heavy over some of the lines to prove working.

The pressed plates I have (pictured) I believe are not legal? Am I right in thinking this? Cheers

If you did not supply the company that made them with your V5 or similar document then they will not be legal. Dubmeister appear to be the one to go for when it comes to buying legal pressed plates as you send them your documents. I think your writing makes it illegal too.

Alright mate, cars looking good. Its a shame i didnt get a good look around it before i moved, its nice to see the car being built properly by replacing worn parts before modding. imo theres nothing worse than lowering and tuning a car when the bushes are fecked and it hasnt been serviced in years.

Autosmart tardis is excellent at getting rid of the marks left by the side trim and any other tar on the paint for that matter!

Will you be attending any polo events in the future? Poloshow, rr day etc? Me and joe are almost finished on the g40 turbo now so will be able to take you out for a spin to convince you to convert to g power

The plates wont land you points btw, its a £30 fine per plate as many times as you get pulled. I've been pulled once in 5 years of german pressed plates, and that was 'national number plate check day' according the officer.

Cheers Shaun, I plan to have the car done for Polo show next year. Going to do all bushes along with a 60/40 kit. Sort out handling and brakes before the engine gets changed! Also want the car wrapped or resprayed and some decent wheels. Car is now on 42k and going well.

Look how small it looks against newer cars!

Just a little update and questions. I'm coming up to 42k now, still going strong. Happy with rear brake and wheel bearing change, car running nice and quiet! Just ordered an AP suspension set up with 40/30 drop. Didn't want to go too low and I have seen a car running the same drop that looked quite good. When changing what else should I change on the car (mounts/bearings/joints) etc? Is it also with fitting upper and lower roll bars too? Once all the handling is sorted ill look into engine swaps etc

Hello again. Little update!! Not much done since last time, I have just ordered some new black diamond discs and pads and a full set of polybush bushes. Will get pictures up once they arrive. After they come I will fit all of it and the suspension in a oner. I'm unsure of what wheels to go for. Once the car is dropped 40/30 will I still easily get a set of 15's on there no problems?? I quite like VW's steelies with same colour plastic cap.

Well some more goodies arrived. Few more bits to go then I'll do it all in a oner! Just coming up to 45k now and still going strong. I have moved to RAF Cosford now in between Telford and Wolverhampton. Can anyone recommend garages round these areas??
