Hi guys, iv got a 9n 1.2 S model, its an 02 plate.

When i start the car up a squealing noise is made, i was advised it is one of the belts in the engine slipping as it starts, i hadn't posted anything on here before this as i didn't think it would be a common problem and more of a problem to take to a garage, but i was leaving work today and walked past a 9n in the car park and the person in the car started it up and the exact same noise was made! Any body else have this problem or experienced it? thanks guys

Does it sound like a loud QUACK that happens literally as the car fires up?

If it happens just after start up so when you let go off the key then mostly starter motor really common on golfs and other vag cars. Get a video of the noise and we would be able to tell you exactly

It will be the starter, they all do it.

Obviously the starter doesn't turn all the time when the engine is running, so it needs to be disengaged somehow. When you turn the key, the ignition switch energises a pinion, which shoots out against the flywheel which lets the starter turn the engine. When you release the key, the pinion is drawn back in, which stops the flywheel spinning the starter.

When the pinion sticks, or becomes slow to come back, the starter is spun by the engine - rather than the other way round!

Nothing at all to worry about, can remove the starter to clean it and it'll be fine, if it bothers you that much.

Great thanks i wouldn't of had much clue with out your help, is doing this a hard job? got you give a bit of a walk through on it or is it too complicated to be talked through?

It could be the bushing in the gesrbox casing that the starters shaft goes into.

This is common on earlier polos, so could be the same thing.

Am I right in saying he 9n uses the golf gesrbox so the starter is at the front? If so it shouldn't be too difficult to get off and clean up

Seems a lot more straight forward then the 6n/2

I would deffinarly give this a go and clean at up a bit, seeing as its accessable.

It is quite common to find people ignoring the bearing bush in the bell-housing that Dixy mentions, so do check and replace if required whilst the starter is out.

Don't go overboard lubricating the starter pinion mechanism, these are subjected to dust from the clutch, so if they are over oiled, you end up with them covered in a 'paste' that does more harm than good. Just a smear of oil is all that is required.

Everyone has been great help thanks a lot guys I'm hoping to take as soon as i get a few hours, what sort of things am i looking for when removing it, and how should i go about trying to get rid of this noise?

Just get yourself some petrol/carb cleaner/brake cleaner and get in amonst it.

You'll find that the outer - where the little gear sits will be covered in clutch dust, clean this off, and then lightly oil the gear and pinion.

Also, check for any fouling on the gear and the end of the shaft. It's most probably just a case or it being dirty as above but is still a possibility.
