Hi everyone

I bought a Polo a while back (1.2L 2003 E 55) for my first car and never had a problem with anything on it at all. However when we bought it the airbag light was on although my dad who is the one in the know about cars assumed it would be a similar problem to my mums car which was a faulty connection so a cheap fix. Obviously the MOT laws changed and the lights needed to be sorted so I took it to get diagnostics run on it and numerous errors came back which basically said it had been in a crash and was told the first thing I'd need to do is replace the Airbag Control Module for £480 odd. I didn't bother doing that I sent my faulty one off to a site to be cleared and it has now got 4 errors remaining.

Basically I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the following errors or any general information which might be useful for this. For instance with the seatbelt pretensioners, from some background reading it would seem they lock the seatbelt up and as mine are in full working order could it be that the connections are lose or something?

Anyway the remaining errors are

01224 - Control Module Does Not Match Vehicle

00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)

00654 - Seat Belt Tensioner Igniter Driver Side (N153)

00655 - Seat Belt Tensioner Igniter Passenger Side (N154)

The company that you had the airbag ecu repaired at must of wiped the coding from it's memory, which is why it's now reporting those codes, you need to get it re-coded to your car

Ah ok, so how do I go about doing that?

And does that mean nothing would need replacing or could it still be that there are some parts that need replacing?

Sorry for all the questions I seem to find so many differing opinions about these things

To re-code the ecu you need to get the car connected to VCDS diagnostics to tell the ecu how many airbags seat pe-tensioners etc That should clear the code 01224 The others see this:-

As a matter of rule, the following components will have to be renewed following an accident where the airbag has been triggered:

All triggered airbag units with control units and sensors.

Supports for front passenger module if front passenger airbag was triggered.

Coil connector with slip ring, when driver airbag has triggered.

All seat belts with triggered belt tensioners.

In addition, the following must also be replaced if necessary (visual check): all damaged components.

One of the errors mentions an airbag igniter which I can find literally nothing about other than a few threads saying this is also known as the clock spring?

I'm just wondering what the part is I'd need to buy to solve that problem?

The "igniter" is the explosive charge in the airbag, if the clockspring is faulty, the control unit will report this as a faulty igniter as it's looking for the resistance of the igniter.

There are different part numbers for the clockspring depending on whether you have ESP (electronic stability program)

I don't suppose you know the part numbers for the seatbelts? I've been looking for some new ones around and theres a few different part numbers I've seen but the one I think it is, is "6Q4 857 705 G" and I take it from research that a new seatbelt will sort the pretensioner error.

One other thing, once I have replaced the faulty parts do the error codes need to be deleted or do they just go themselves once the parts have been replaced. Only reason I ask is I am looking into the VCDS software and will leave that till I've sorted the other parts if it needs to be done.

You will need VCDS full working copy not VCDS lite to clear these faults and to re-code the control unit

If you get a cheap lead from ebay, it will have to be one thats CANbus capable, not all of them are!! Then you'll need to buy a licence $99 from Ross-tech.com to get the full functions

I suppose $99 isn't too bad if I could pick up a cheap lead if no one was within travelling distance.

Re the seatbelts, do all seatbelts that you can buy with that part number have pretensioners or is this a separate thing to the seatbelt?

Right so the yellow connector is the pretensioner? Lovely, really getting somewhere here. Not paying £180 per seatbelt!

I'll take a look at the link but I'll probably end up getting a cable of ebay (one like you suggested) and paying the $99 to be honest.

Been reading about the clock spring and looking at buying one, only three appear on ebay with the part number you supplied (non esp)

Is this the part I am after as on some posts I have read it mentions a yellow connection (like the pretensioners) although on this image I don't see any connection of the type. Also this one says 2010 onwards?!

Is there anywhere else to source these sort of parts without going to volkswagen itself I have searched but it doesn't seem to return much, nothing in English anyway.

6Q0959653B is showing on the parts list for 2010 onwards 6R models, if it ends in A or nothing it's for the 9N3 upto 2010 Might be worth a call to your local dealers to see if the "B" has superceeded the others?

The Yellow connectors will be on the loom comming up the steering column to mate with the back of the clockspring and on the end of the wires from the airbag to mate with the front of it.

If you can't find one on ebay (tried anyone breaking one?) then it will be VW dealer or TPS to supply a new one, could try www.stevensvw.co.uk as they break just VW's

Right...some progress.

Removed the 'faulty' parts today, got a seatbelt off and the clockspring in about an hour and a half thanks to my dad.

Firstly the seatbelts weren't connected up with the connections in the car at all and the connection was just sat next to the seatbelt without being in it.

Could this mean that with connecting these up there is a chance it could work or is there any way to tell by looking at the seatbelt/connection if it is not going to work.I don't want to order the new seatbelts until I know for sure these won't work.

Also got the clockspring off, is there any way to tell if this is broken too and also the part number on here isn't on the part at all?

When taking it off I noticed a part number on the Indicator section which matched an ebay part with a clockspring joined...
