You would only need a camshaft if it worn badly most likely just the followers. I had the same problem when I brought mine. Last owner did low mileage and didn't change the oil. The tappets sounded like a diesel and they get they get junked up with bad oil and dirt. I tried to clean them and didn't work so had to buy 8 new ones cost about £60. Part Number 050109309H

And what you need. you can get them cheap about a fiver each but you either need 8 or 16 depending on what engine you got.

Also put do an engine flush and change the oil. I use 5w 30w part sythemtic to get the oil around the engine faster when colder and it runs alot quieter

Thanks for the advice. It's much appreciated. I have been told it would be less hassle and probs cheaper to replace the whole engine?

What's your thoughts on that? I'm going to show the other half what you've already said though. Wish I wasn't such a novice then I might understand what everything means lol! :(

Who told you to replace the engine? if you can buy and replace a whole engine for less than £100 which is the cost of the tappets and oil change. engine alone is £200 plus (second hand) plus you would service it, change or the belts because you don't know where it's been or been driven to an inch of it's life. then you have to take the old engine out and putting the new one in and even then the new (second hand) engine could have noise tappets.

Noise tappets is a common vw problem, replace the tappets and do the advice on the website above and all will be sweet.

I did my tappets at 65000 and i'm now 2 years later and 85000 and still all quiet.

It's a 1.0 and its done about 56000. I did think it would be more costly to replace the engine but as I don't know much I guessed maybe I was wrong.

And it defo needs a new camshaft :(

Low mileage, probably driven to the shops and back. The problem is some people only do 4000 mile in a year and don't think need a service or oil change. The fewer miles you do the more often you should change the oil as it does get up to temperature and lubes the engine.

And why does it need a camshaft? who told you that? useless it been driven on worn tappet for a long long time or oil starvation and looks like this

Basically we bought it knowing it was tappety but now it's louder and loses power. Hubby says it needs a new camshaft as its f**ked. Would really prefer to replace these parts than the whole engine as I'm struggling to find one.

it's £160 (brand new) for a camshaft but you need too look at it first before splashing out the money.

Losing power could be down to other reasons.

always start cheap and work up from their. (is your husband a mechanic?)

Beacuse it's such a low mileage and tappy engine you need to look at this as well

The oil seporator becomes blocked with bad oil and can lead to the car stalling.

No he's not a mechanic but his mechanic friends have told him its bust. On looking at the link you posted, he says it doesn't look like that but looks worn on the sides? I think we are going to get another opinion and yes I totally agree that it's worth starting cheap and going up from there.

I appreciate you taking the time to help me. It's my first car and I love it (even though I've not passed my test yet!) Was an absolute bargain for £450 with coilovers and lots of other details I've forgotten already! Once it's fully working I'm really looking forward to driving it :)

No worries a lot of people are here to help if you can get photo up as well it helps a lot.

get a picture up of the camshaft the cam would wear where it makes contact with the tappet on the side sounds strange.

With the power loss it could just a need a good service. another thing to check is while the engine is running take the oil filler cap off and check for white smoke. no white smoke = good

check out the other link about the oil breather as it's another common problem and being it low mileage and the tappets have seized it will probably have a blocked oil breather/separator.

When you buy your new tappets open them up put them into a container and fill the container with fresh oil and leave them to soak up oil for about 24 hours. Just to help it along when you put them in and start it the first time.

So here's the car. It's at hubby's work at the mo but will get a photo of the camshaft so you can tell me what you think :)
