I've just drove into a small cul de sac and it was a really tight fit, I couldn't go up the high curbs due to my car being low so I reversed and I've accidently hit a wooden pole thing (pretty pathetic) and it's come off, obviously a mum has seen and has come screaming out at me, took my reg ect saying I was "speeding" when I was using just clutch and I'm an idiot because there was kids around even though I waited like 2 minutes for them to cross the road and get into there house, tbh didn't even feel it when I hit it and there's not a single mark on the rear of my car, can anyone tell me where I stand? Obviously ill have to pay but anyone been in a similar situation and rough cost?

How can she prove it though if she didn't take a photo of damage to pole and to your car there's no evidence. Wait for the council to contact you and theme deny all knowledge off the incident.

Without evidence, it will never stand. Unless there is CCTV I wouldn't worry about it, they can take it out of your extortionate road tax.

it's more or less policy at least in my local council, they wouldn't let my work pay for a damaged sign, it had to go through insurance.

He has already made a statement, probably a confession, that's all they need.

I know you wanted to do the right thing, but since it was council property i wouldn't have given them any details unless they owned the post you hit or where tenant on the land, but if it's something on the road/pavement i'd just make a note of the address and report it to the police, they will advise you on who you need to contact (if necessary).

Under no circumstances i would let anyone other than the police phone my insurance as it has absolutely nothing to do with them if they owned the post or not!

I would've laughed at her and asked her to prove I was speeding. If you was speeding, there'd be skid marks as you wouldn't of seen the post until the last minute and there'd be proper damage to your car which as you say there isn't. If the post was indeed rotten and part of a fence that was no longer there then I cant see why the council would bill you as if they were going to replace said fence they'd have done it by now.
