Help me find a gearbox? - Please

Featured Replies

Hi, i have had gear box issues and my uncle is willing to fit a new one if i can find one.

I have a VW Polo E 1.4 2001 5SPEED.

I have looked all over the place for reconditioned gearboxes and the prices vary so much, would someone be able to give me a decent link to a decent gearbox?

Thank you so much.

Youll need the gearbox code, look in your boot at the sticker, its 3 letters.

With second hand gearboxes, your always taking a risk.

Best bet is a scrapyard, they offer a few months warranty which will give you time to take it out and find a new one if needed.

Having it reconditioned it by far the best option but if you cannot afford it then be prepared to take a few out.

What issues do you have?

I am looking at reconditioned gearboxes.

My uncle will fit it for £100.

Looks like ETD.

Get yours reconditioned rather than getting another. You dont know the previous history.

So you have an ETD code, if you have a look at this http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=317419 there are some pdfs with all the gearbox codes and ratios, so you can work out what other codes will give you the same ratio, and you'll need to make sure it's a cable change gearbox unless your prepared to replace the gearlever assembly

As Nige says, the link above means you can look at other boxes.

All boxes in the 6n2 range (the car you have), physically fit, just have different ratios.

You can fit a 1.0 box, it'll be nippier, but have less top end. Can fit a 1.6 box, but less acceleration, etc. The ratios tell all.

But yeah, can fit any box. I had the same box the whole time, it's because they leak oil and then fail, mine always had oil and never shit itself..

Thank you.

What sort of price would i be looking at for a new gear box? And would a repair be okay?

Repair Quote - £250-350

Recon Gearbox - £400-715 (1 Year Guarantee)

Which would you recommend?

Central VW in Birmingham quoted me £550+£100 labour (take out and in) +vat

All new everything.

Id go full recon, no point spending 2/3 of the money having it fixed for something else to fail later.
