Hey there, I have an N reg polo 1.3 manual and the clutch arm and input shaft bearing have gone.

Looking to replace the whole box as recon looks out of the question , just wondering apart from 1.3 6n boxes what else will fit and work

It's a rod change with cable clutch on top of the box pulling from the back

Pretty much any 6n/6n2 petrol gearbox will fit if you swap over the bracket , the later type use cable selectors, but will not effect if you use a rod shift.

085 is the gearbox type and is used up until late 2001.

I would use a 1.4 or 1.6 box asyou will get better motorway cruising out of it. 1.0 will be bulkier, but will have to rag it at speed. They use different ratios so they all vary, but generally 1.4 is good for smaller (albeit just slightly) engines.

Will mk3 golf 1.4 gearboxes fit ?

If the starter is behind the engine and pointing the opposite way to the gearbox then I would say yes. What engine code is it?

It's a aex 1.4 mk4 golf suppose I need to make sure the clutch is on top and not the front too

Ratios are worth considering, the 1.3 8v 6n box is the same ratios as a 1.4 16v apart from fifth, which means its quite close anda fairly nice box for blatting about, the 1.4 is fairly long, and the 1.6 8v even longer, fine for motorway but driving experience is bland as.

Even earlier boxes should work from mk3's etc, depends what you want from the car, as its an opportunity to change/improve if you want to.

Cable change boxes can be used IIRC, you need to remove the cable mechanism off the box, there is an extra bit of casting which can stay I believe too, thats to convert to rod, but you cant convert a rod to cable without changing the casings.

What I'm saying is if the starter is atthe back of the engine then it's more then likely its an085 box, and will fit but may have a different bracket. If it's at the front facing the other way (most golf engines) then it's a 02x box and won't fit.

Yes if it's a cable box then just remove the mechanism and it's the same box, only difference is the two extra holes for mounting the mechanism.

If polo then yes, golf ispossible,as some of them had polo engines,but some didn't.

Sorry should say it was a polo 1.4 16v looks the same apart from cable change . But should be able to change that to rod change? Or the car to cable if not

Yes it will fit.

You don't have to change the linkage, unless of course you wanted to. The original rod change will work fine, just slots on and bolt in like on the old box.
