going to look at a mk2 golf 1.8 8v gti tonight..

is there anything i need to look out for...

any common faults or major places for rust etc?

I'd say its main fault would be the 8 missing valves

Rust hiding under arch trims can be a biggy, give them a little tug and listen for the sound you get when you crush corn flakes or the trim no longer being fastened to the arch. Don't pull too hard tho incase it comes off I your hand.

Make sure the engine idles as it should with no hunting. Check for smoke when cold

90 Spec? Check where the battery is situated that can always be a place of corrosion. Vac leaks are fairly common with those engines too, abf swap in mind for the future or vr?

i know its missing 8v lol..but i am thinking bout either a abf or a pd conversion to it to be honest.

Mainly previous accident damage and the quality of the repair. A cynic (me) would say most of them have had some degree of front ender at some stage in their lives.

check the sills, all jacking points, battery tray, arches, check the boot to see if the option sticker is still there, check if the chassis legs are straight etc

Just bought an 8v gti the amount of people that have told me its better than the 16v. Assuming realiabilty

The 16v doesn't pull that well before about 4k... the 8v doesn't pull that well at all

Last time I had one, I got it ready for test, drove it 20 miles to MOT, drove it back, branded it a boring eurobox and stuck it straight back up for sale.

Tbh who gives a shit when it looks that cool and fresh, mk2 golf GTI will never be considered fast, 8 or 16v. If you are after one just look for a tidy shell.

Golfs are gay anyway unless they have at least 250-300hp +

No, you just need to put some proper suspension and tyres on it..

I drove a few back in the day when they were popular with mates, late '90s. They really varied. Alex's lowered G-reg was slow and annoying, Steve's E-reg 5dr was the most unreliable car in existence but Milf's C-reg stock early spec one was just lovely - had just the right amount of power so you could work it but still shift nicely, flexible chassis you could really play with, and it felt tight, straight and fresh despite big mileage.

Lots of the later ones had big rust problems as well as loosing the Bosch K-Jet fuel system, but most of the crap hasn't survived. I didn't go for a Golf, i went for a Scirocco instead. Because it was a better driver's car than the Golfs, just isn't as desirable because you can't get big wheels on the front and not everyone can stomach that front end..

Proper suspension? How do you know what suspension it has by looking at a picture also it had original ra's and original manufactures specification tyres on when I bought it, the other ras are off the polo hence the skinny tyres, but only till i find some wheels that i want. Althought originally I wrote a long reply I can't be bothered to justify myself to someone who clearly wouldn't care about the response.
