I'm guessing its the seal thats gone by how you describe it ?

You can replace the seal or the whole sunroof cartridge, but it would mean removing A/B/C pillars and headlining and sunroof cartridge to do it.

If it helps, the 6N sunroof cartridge has the same part number as a MK3 golf, mine is the same, but luckily I'm breaking a MK3 GTi.

After looking at my seal, it seems to have dropped at the front !

Looks like an easy fix for me, just wind sunroof back half way, squeze in sealant and G clamp for a couple of hours.
