Kwijibo_coupe's Mk3 GT Coupe

Decided to do some work on this thing today since it was nice out.

Since I built it I've been having charging issues, tried 2 alternators and both produced this result...

null_zpstyes9dgs.jpg

The mk2 charges a lot better so before I splash out on a new alternator I thought I'd give the one off the mk2 a go.

So this afternoon my street looked like this.

null_zps81s71ufm.jpg

Wasn't as simple a swap as I was hoping but after a bit of messing around I got the mk2 alternator to fit. Chucked the belt on and started it up to find this....

null_zpsmtjiw2o6.jpg

That's the first time I've seen the volt gauge that high so was well chuffed. let the car warm up, put on the lights and the blowers and it was still very close to 14v so pretty happy with that.

But as always something has to happen....after about half an hour of running this happened.

null_zps3kwpcmhb.jpg

It was an old belt anyway but still annoying all the same. The one off the mk2 was shorter and didn't fit (the pulleys on the GT are bigger) and since it was 5 O'Clock by this time there was no way I'm getting another belt today.

Never mind, at least it gets to spend the night on my street looking like this...

null_zpsmaqy2eep.jpg

Hopefully get a new belt tomorrow and I can enjoy the last of the nice weather until she gets tucked away for the winter.

Since I'm at work tonight I can take advantage and post up a proper update. Finished painting the engine bay and front panel, then fitted the steering rack, 20mm master cylinder and brake lines. Seem

You are right an update is needed. But due to me destroying my laptop just before the Polo Social I've only been able to get on with my iPad or borrowing laptops. Anyway luckily I have the use of a p

Better update this before I forget. For some reason the drivers side strut took me 5 minutes to fit. I dunno if it was because I'd had a good nights sleep, done something different or the hole in the

Looks lovely mate...I never knew the mk2 alternators were any different?

That's a sound socket set you got there as well. What's it include and how much did it set you back?

  • Author

The top bolt is different, much thinner than the mk2f one and the bottom bracket is slightly different too. The alternator itself looks a much better design and considering it looks original (still has VW stamped on it) I'm surprised it is still going strong.

It is a Bahco socket set, still available from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bahco-Socket-106-Piece-2-Inch-Drive/dp/B000Y8OFI6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1444426421&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=bahco+socket+set&psc=1

I got it a couple years back, add a 10mm allen bit, a male multispline set and a hammer and you can dismantle a Polo (or any other VW of that era) without the need for anything else really. It is usually always in the back of whatever Polo I'm driving and has saved me a couple times.

That's a bit expensive for my liking for the set although I've spent collectively a lot more just accumulating what was in your set lol

I was thinking of an alternator upgrade as mine is pretty new but charges the battery really slowly.

Both the polo's look spot on you should update more often

Just a quick question although may be a dumb one to you but I am not an electrical guy..

How did you wire up the voltmeter?

I wouldnt mind knowing what is going on from inside the car to prevent what happened the other day by finding out my alternator wasnt charging when the battery died away from home lol

  • Author

I took the battery live from the stereo wiring and the ground from under the dash for mine. I find the gauges very handy, much better than the idiot lights on the dash that only tell you half the story. Plus gauges are manly....

Thanks mate...sounds easy enough for me then. And yes they are manly [emoji38]

Small update, since winter is coming the GT will be hidden away after this Sunday. But thought I'd do something useful on it today.

My turbo oil return pipe ended up being a quick bodge job during it's little rebuild earlier this year and I've been meaning to sort it for ages as it's not 100% oil tight.

This is it...just a mess of pipes and jubilee clips.

The new one looks like this :)

No puddles under the car as yet so looking good so far :)

This Sunday I'll be taking the car down to Crail for it's last blast down the drag strip this year. Hopefully it is dry and I can attempt to get into the 13s.

Went to the drag strip yesterday. Got there nice and early so we were the first ones there!

The day was good but it was cold, damp and there was a very strong head wind. So no one was really getting the times they expected. I did 14 runs and the best time was a 14.993 @ 94.5mph. So as slower than last time :( I think next year I'm going to invest in some drag slicks :)

Here is a video of me yesterday though, my launches were all the same, just loads of wheel spin and limiter bashing.

First shot looks brill, looks cool taking off too and bet its fun especially when you have it to yourself

It is a good laugh, I love it. Can't beat thrashing the pants off your own car.

Is the 106 in the lockup yours? And is it a genuine rallye?

If so what are you doing with it?

Apologise for acting like David dimbleby on question time...I saw it ages ago and always wondered

  • Author

How far back did you go to spot that? haha.

It belongs to my mate who I share the lockup with. It is a genuine rallye shell, currently been stripped to a bare shell and getting a custom cage welded into it.

He has an engine which is currently in his 106 XSi, it is a bored out 1.6 16v GTI lump on Jenvey throttle bodies, 206bhp or something like that. So that will be going into the rallye shell along with his coilovers and other fancy bits to be a weekend track toy.

I thought I spotted it ages ago when I read your thread so searched again when I saw one for sale out of interest lol its near the beginning

Sounds like some good plans for it, they are brilliant engines for big power with little cc, always loved them since my first car being a 106 and wouldn't have minded a standard 8valve as a daily :/ prices are hiking up now and it's about 2000 for a decent one and up to about 3k+ for very nice examples

Has he got a thread on this build on 106owners?

  • Author

I think he is on the Rallye Register?

Ahh I'll have a look, think I signed up a while back, cheers and sorry for jumbling your thread up [emoji20]

Theses are two of my favourite pictures of your car.

You need to post the most recent one from your instagram Steve, that's a really cool shot

Thanks Scott. Both are currently being used as a background :)

Thanks John. Seems my camera and photo editing skills are getting better then.

I'll get that picture up along with a few updates in the near future :)

Well the car has had a couple washes now and each time the steel wheels just let it down.

I don't like the trims on and I can't really afford to spend money on buying tyres for the alloys I have lined up to go on.

So instead I took a trip to Halfords armed with a trade card and spent £15 on some paint and set to work.

Tomorrow I'll finish them off with a couple coats of lacquer then its a long 24 hour wait to see how they look on the car.

Sorry for the poor quality pictures just now, using the iPhone to upload pictures is a lot easier than the hassle I have to go through with the DSLR shots haha.

Just happened to stumble accross this ... i am in the same position (cant afford new wheels) been considering running it on steelies without trim. May have to give this a bash to bring them to life a bit!

This car has literally been sitting all year. I drove it 8 miles out to my new house and that is it. But this weekend just gone, as my other 2 Polos were both out of commission I had to get this one ready to take to a meet...and I'm so glad I did. Actually fallen in love with it again, I had forgotten how much fun it is.

All I did to it over the weekend was swap the engine mount and top gearbox mount over from the G40 cup car items to standard ones. Also swapped the wheels over for a set of BBS Mahles I got from Ross. They are 13 x 6 ET13 and I have a 15mm spacer on the rear, all running 165/55/13 tyres. With the new engine mounts and new wheels the look and feel of the car have changed, for the better. No more horrible vibrations coming through the car and the way the car sits on those tiny tyres is awesome I think!

Anyway some pictures.

Like I say I've completely fallen in love with it again. Did over 100 miles in the last 2 days and hasn't skipped a beat, so much fun when the boost comes in too. Also with the lack of vibration I can actually hear the engine and exhaust now. Love hearing it spool up then the exhaust comes alive, just puts a massive smile on my face :D

Glad you have fell in love with it again mate, and it does look bloody awesome on the mahles they suit it down to the ground! Can't wait to see it

Been using this as a daily for the last few weeks, firstly because the weather up here has been pretty good lately and secondly to try and figure out if anything needs doing on top of my current plans before the Polo Social.

With a month left of the MOT it is now time to start getting it sorted, so garage got a little bit of a clean up to make room.

null_zpshqidl44z.jpg

The the GT got backed in.

null_zpssncrr13m.jpg

null_zpsjccwwmn8.jpg

Current plans are as follows:

Strip the car to pretty much a shell with an engine

Remove remainder of interior sound deadening

Touch up the Hammerite painted interior floor

Remove spare wheel well

Fit bucket seat (driver side)

Fit harness (driver side)

Clean up and repaint front suspension & subframe etc.

Fit camber adjustable top mounts

Fix random oil leak

Then once that is all done decide on wheels/tyres for the Social and obviously put it through an MOT.

Wish me luck :) I'll update as I go along.

Great thread and lovely gt.

You got your work cut out then! You bought the spare wheel well panel from ppp?
