Insurance and Lowering.

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of gettting my car lowered but it really depends on how much it will effect my insurance.

I'm guessing that it depends weather you get sports springs or just cut your own... Is cutting your springs illegal?

Anyway lets say I get sports springs for £200 or whatever how would that effect my insurance.

Also a side question even know my side questions never seem to get anwsered, where can I get it done? At any garage or do I have to find a specialist?

Thanks. Btw I haven't been driving for a year yet.

The best thing to do is phone your insurance and ask what difference it would make - all policies are different..

Cutting springs isn't illegal, but it's not a very good idea, as they can drop out of line when they have less downforce on than normal (humpback bridge being a classic example). It's debatable whether a car with cut springs should pass an MOT.

Any garage can swap a set of springs. The fun of car modding is that you do it yourself though.

Most people recommend using a set of sports shocks with the springs, rather than OEM shocks and lowerring springs.

Yeah I'm not gonna cut my springs, I've realised that its a dodgy idea. I have a very limeted budget so I do think I can afford sport shocks so I as an example I bought these http://www.dpmautostyling.co.uk/catalogue/...379_391_142_480, would that be enough if I just handed that into a garage, I'm really no mechanic...

Also I know it varies but what was the change for you guys that have already done it?

:-D i was told by 2 insurance companies that if i lowered more than 40mm it would effect my insurance

so stayed at 40mm but i think i will lower as I'm old

so they said you could fit coilovers if you only dropped it by 40mil?

Last time I heard, the cut off was 50mm (but I guess it depends on what insurance company you use) - ie more that 50mm drop or less than 50mm drop. Either way, you'll need to tell them (natch)

As for saving dosh - if the springs don't drop the car moe than 40mm, you can use STANDARD shocks. Obviously, it's better to use new ones, but (at a push) you could just get some springs...........

Never, ever chop coils off springs!! Yes, the car will go lower, but it will bottom out VERY easily and be a death trap!! Plus any decent MOT station will fail it!!

^^^^^^^

plus the coil does not sit in the holder properly.

so when you jack the car up the spring could fall out. same when you go over a bump.

companies like more than have cool terms and conditions - you CANNOT modify you are car so that it increases TOP SPEED/ACCELERATION etc - that means visual changes i.e. tints/lowering is allowed - as it doesnt make you are car faster - even though more than may be slightly more £ - it may be worth it

norwich union add 10% to you are premium if u lower you are car by any amount, no matter if its just springs or full coilovers.

do u kno they even put it up by 10% for window tints.

^^^ :doubt:

It's a shame we all have to take the blame for 'josh boy racer's tomfoolery, isn't it.

ill own up my rear springs are cut! they are cut about 1cm's of a coil lol the handeling is infact better than it was. and it sits perfect in the cup.

I was just pissed of that my car sat 10mm higher at the back. I couldnt be arsed spending 400 quid for coilovers so i cut them.

Now every thing is fine if not better than it was before. untill something goes wrong with them. my opinions will not changed.

how ever cutting standard springs on standard shocks. IS A BIG NO NO!

i think i'm with norwich union and i'm about to lower my car :S might not tell them its 60mm :/ probably try n have me deported or something :ninja:

My GT...-70mm shocks + springs meant +£500 on insurance! was worth it though...dont you just love to feel them G's!
