I have a 1.3 aav mk2f and in the past week it has been cutting out quite a lot but after some persistance it has been starting again. I've checked everything it workig fine apart from fuel getting into the carb (bosch carb I think) I've got fuel pressure and when I undo the nut petrol squirts out so I know its not the fuel pump or anything on that area. I've cleaned the top of the carb with carb cleaner and ran for a few seconds till it died and now it wont start and its 10 miles away from my house. Can anybody shed any light on this for me please I need the car to get to and from work

Are you quite sure that you have a carburettor on that car? or could you be referring to the SPI (Single Point Injection) throttle body (T.B.)?

In either case, it might pay to check for vacuum (air) leaks on the inlet manifold, including the carburettor (if it has one) or the throttle body if it is SPI.

As it fired up when you used the carb-cleaner, it would seem that the ignition side of things is, at least reasonable.

If you are unable to find a vacuum leak, you have probably got problems with the injector (if it has one), it could simply need cleaning, but you should also check the electrical resistance, which should be between 1.2 and 1.6 Ohms

If you do strip the injector, take care not to loose or damage the gaskets and 'O' rings, better still, fit new ones if you are able to obtain them.

when you put the car to ignition on the key can you hear the fuel pump prime? same sort of thing happened to mine and turned out t was the fuel pump relay (tucked behind the ECU) could be an earth check around the loom coming into the engine and the earths that attach to the top of the rocker cover. failing that then yeah check the vacuum hoses as again I've had that happen before, you would hear a whistling sound on idle if you lift the bonnet unless its a small tear.

First problem is there is no carb.....

Is the injector spraying at all?

Right sorry guys its the spi so not a carb stupid me lol and yes fuel pump is priming got fuel going up to the injector just not going in can anyone shed any light on this my cars still stuck where it is and need it home but stupid me dont have any breakdown cover

As above is the injector spraying fuel? I'd sothen it's likely flooded and the plugs are wet. If you can then chuck some new ones I there, of not then take them out and dry then, then burn any fuel or oil off with a lighter and refit. If it jumps into life then it's very likely you've found the problem also check the rotor arm and cap are clean.another possibility is the coil. While the plugs are out it's best to check for a spark really.

Also, could you not tow it? Oldskool, I know but it might be s good idea to get it home so you can work on it easier.

My mate is picking it up later and bringing it home for me it has spark on all 4 plugs all dry and clean not long changed them rotor arm anddizzy are okay but I have spares that I will try anyway. Theres just no fuel going into the injector its bone dry I'm gonna have a closer look at it in the morning as I'm working nights this week and check absolutly everthing
