Hey, is there any chance someone can get a picture or something, to show me the location of the coolant temperature sensor?

I need to replace it, I want to do it myself, but I'm unsure of the location, I've looked quite a few times, and researched a load of times... but I still can't work out where it is.

I don't want to give in and take it to the garage haha

Also are the £5-10 ebay sensors any good to use? or should i get one from a dealer?

Doing this on my phone so may look really pixilated if your on a computer

The red mark is the location.

When I changed mine on my 6n I got it for £8 from TPS/GSF (can't remember which) and they're basically a like for like

Take you engine cover off and take some snaps of your actual engine from top view and some from between the battery and the right side of the engine facing the engine, take a few good shots out them up and il try point it out to you. It's in the area on that pic so get some from there as well

Can't really see it from them pics, best bet is to follow the coolant pipes and check for it, will be a 2 pin connector on it

You did, have the new one ready when you take it out as it'll pour coolant everywhere so you need to so a quick swap

Thanks for the help Matt haha, I'm used to working on minis, don't tend to get many sensors on them haha.

Will do, cheers, take it I remove the black plastic plug first, then pull the metal clip thing out, and push the other on in quickly, new clip back on then reattach plug?

Exactly that just make sure you put a new seal in as well

Make sure that the old one comes out as well!!

If you do it when the engine has gone really cold, there wont be any pressure in the system, so you won't loose as much coolant.

I never seem to have much success with 'will-fit' sensors, so I always use genuine VW ones.

While you're at it, clean your throttle body out! It's filthy.

(Wynn's Carb cleaner or similar in liberal amounts, rag, blasting it down the butterfly, wipe the edges...)

Part came this morning, fitted it in about 5 minutes, only lost a tiny bit of coolant... all topped up, started perfectly, idles at 750rpm again, engine sounds nicer and felt a bit tighter through the revs, i guess that's as it isn't overfuelling any more

Thank you for identifying the location of this part. Without this discussion, and the clear photos, I wouldn't have been able to change the faulty coolant sensor on my type 9N this morning.

I noticed that this thread is three years old but the information was still so useful.
