So after the death of the mk 3 I've decided to have a go at a polo estate as my next project

Wont be doing it til middle of next year though so just gathering a bit of info and getting ideas at the moment

Seeing as the polo estate and the seat cordoba are in a sense the same car would the 2.0 16v gti engine out the cordoba fit in the estate or will it be a massive headache?

Anything is possible depending on how good you are with a welder. The mounts are different so it's as much work as fitting a 1.8t. The cordoba has a MK2 golf floor pan and MK3 golf under the bonnet with polo suspension.

There's no need for a welder here, just drop it in.

Drop-in as is the VR6 with the right subframe/front suspension etc.

thinking of getting a whole donor car instead of just the engine so that should make it easier

weldings not a problem just didn't want to have to start choppin loads out the engine bay and havin to move everythin about.

Yeah, just offer up a subframe from whatever and hold it in place with a shit load of cable ties..

Some people have paid several thousand pounds to fit a tall block engine in a pre-2003 Polo. Tall blocks being those of 1.8 litres upwards. Otherwise, it's not the done thing. It's not the done thing because it's seriously not easy.

i always assumed the estate shared aa base with the mk3 golf meaning tall block engines were an option and thought the cordoba and the polo estate/ saloon were basically the same car just rebadged

Yeah you're right. Totally missed it was an estate Yeah it's a simple conversion and if you can get a donor car then it's happy days :)

The ABF (2.0 16v) and AFT (1.6 8v) are essentially the same tall block engine. (same engine as that saloon in the vr6 thread on retro rides) So if you are going to buy an estate make sure it has that engine in as it will give you the least number of problems.

I have an AFT in my daily golf mk2, awesome engine for the car.

Just buy a cheap rusty mk3 VR6 off Ebay then break it for everything you don't need on a 99p start free listing day.

Yeah, he clearly says Polo estate which is 6k/2, yet i was thinking 6n/2 for some reason, hence my pre-2003 comment, apologies.

Have heard of a few issues on a VR6 conversion, pedal box had to be replaced, problems with steering column, but i suspect this was going into a 6k2 which would have fly-by-wire.

So you might wanna do your homework there or just ensure you start off with a 6k1 cable throttle version (6n1 dash instead of Lupo dash) to make life easier because the ABF Cordobas were earlier types with cable throttle.

The bulkhead is golf mk3.

You can just use a golf mk3 pedalbox, no stress and a nice bolt in affair.

It's just a pretty easy conversion.
