Hello, I was recently looking at Boras on gumtree and come across this. Seems to good to be true.

I spoke to the guy through Email and he said he would drop the price to 700, I asked if there was anything wrong exerior or mechanical and all he said was few bubble on wheel arch which I can get done easily. And the airbag light is on because he took the wrong fuse out when changing a fuse. Does this seem too good to be true? He said the gearbox and clutch were sound when I asked. Just wondering if anyone thinks this is too cheap or if there could be a problem that wouldnt show up to the untrained eye. Thanks.

Seems fair. 1.6SE's aren't exactly desirable.

The air bag light should have gone back out once the fuse was put back in. On me pot start up the car will go through the system and see there are no faults and then turn the light out. This means potentially there is an air bag fault. Still cheap though

Wrong colour, wrong wheels - i'd rather have the black one on ebay, might get it for the same price.

A MK4 Golf 1.6 SE has just sold on there for £399, tidy in a desirable metallic red, just it had no MoT left.

Thanks guys even if not now maybe at a later date, I'm probably going to stick to my Polo for the moment but definitely want either a golf or Bora probably only a 1.6 as I dont want to shoot up for bif engine sizes too quick and a 1.6 SE will still be quicker than my 1.4 SE.

Sky high miles on a 1.6 petrol, seems over priced if anything man

A friend of mine just bough a 1.6 bora with over 100k on the clock for £1200......

Would be quicker than your 1.4 polo by a fraction and will have way less mpg, the bora is heavy for a 1.6 to carrying around

Hmm I never thought of the MPG. Id probably go for a 1.6 or a 1.8 TDI golf next then. Something with a bigger engine but a bit smaller than a Bora, how much should I look at paying for a decent Golf mk4?

Best thing to do would be go through ebay and look at prices and in local papers etc, that way you can usually avoid any scene tax and work out the prices from different people.

As with anything a good price is what you are happy with after doing your research,

I'm picky with milage and history so what might be a good price for me might not be for someone else.

Don't jump in on the first one you see, with newer cars like golfs/boras/passats there's plenty around and its a buyers market.

Mk4 golfs/boras seem to hold their money well, especially diesel ones. A 1.6 petrol would be fine in that size car, they are 105bhp anyway and from what I remember a friend used to frequently average over 40mpg.

and with regards to mileage, I'm currently running a Mk4 gold tdi which has done 217k miles and is in better condition than most golfs with half that mileage and the engine is sweet too. All depends on what sort of life its had. A well looked after car should go on forever.

My friend had a mk4 golf, 1.6 16v, 115hp or something, averaged 37mpg on V power, and my 6n 1.4 8v was nearly as fast, gutless pieces of shit, a 1.9tdi be a lot better IMO

Don't forget the fact that 1.4 and 1.6 MK4 golf platform cars gearboxes are made of fluff...

That price isn't cheap at all. Its about right. I'd spend a bit more and get a TDI.

If the system logs a fault, it won't clear until you use vag-com to do it. So he could be telling the truth. Still, it's a 1.6 Bora with loads of miles, a little rust. And it's a Boring..

Meh, 700 quid, I'd ask for 500..
