I usually go to Tesco for my diesel as I get 5p off per litre with shopping but I've heard of this black sludge growing on the diesel and nackering engines? apparently it's due to minimal to no additives in the fuel?

My auntie has been round just telling me about it after I heard a few weeks back about it. Her new Hyundai 4x4 has gone kaput after 2-3 years of running on it main dealers have had it to pieces to diagnose problem.

Any one else heard about this? I'm wondering where to tank up now?

I have seen many high pressure pump failures on the newer TDI's and my honest belief is that it's shitty fuel. You always hear the story's that all the fuel is the same but until its proved rather than just hear say I will remain skeptical.

I always use shell personally cause i collect the points and there a big brand which hopefully means quality fuel.

Iv found V power a bit inconsistent, BP Ultimate seems better IMO

both shell V power and BP Ultimate are a lot better grade feul compaired to the 95ron rubbish

and some of the things tescos puts through there pumps

All fuels need to pass certain criteria before they can be sold here, tbh with how popular supermarket fuel is these days with all their little promotions and shit, I call bullshit on this story until theres some evidence to back it up. If it were true imagine how many thousands of cars would be dying from it on a weekly basis.

All fuel comes from the same place, big wells of dead dinosaurs out in the North Sea and Middle East etc.

It may be refined slightly differently but petrol and diesel all get made from the same crude oil.

Diesel is by nature less refined than petrol so I believe.

Over the years I've heard of diesel cars being run on mixtures of fuels and never really going wrong.

And now suddenly a couple of newer cars die and is the fuel that has killed it?

What about the 20 year old Pug 205 diesel I see going about around by me. Surely that would be effected too? Or my dads BMW 5 Series Diesel? Or everyone else I know that runs a diesel car?

Yes different companies put different additives etc in their fuels but if it was killing cars then the streets would be littered with fucked cars due to the amount of diesels that go about these days.

If you can run a car on biodiesel with no additives whats the difference?

My dad had a honda 2.2tdi civic which ran off of morrisons diesel (to collect the vouchers) and never went wrong after 140k miles within 3 years.

My belief is that they are a better quality fuel but all of them have additives in them, some more than others.

Didnt Fifth gear do something on the different diesel brands and came out with the expensive ones gives you a few more hp if used frequently.

if its the old pd deisel engine their pretty much bomb proof so supermarket fuel shldnt b a problem. its generaly card engines tht r fussy about their fuel. but if u go 2 a shell an sign up 4 a club card its worth while.

Agree with that on all fronts. I've only ever had low-pressure diesels, so as long as it's slimey and compress-ignites, I've always found it all to be the same. Fond memories of the weird look on my mate's face when he was moving house. He threw half a bottle of veg oil in the bin, I fished it out and poured it in the van's tank .

I find a carb'd petrol is always a good measure of fuel quality. I set my old Mk2 up on Shell and it was fine on Shell and Esso, but idled rough on supermarket fuel, and ran crap on Texaco.

I also never go to a filling station where there's a tanker in. Basic reason says filling the forecourt tanks stirs up all the crap and absorbed water (remember petrol is anhydrous) in the bottom of the tank. Give it time to settle then go back.

The tight bastard in me only fills up first thing in the morning. Thermal expansion means if you fill up when it's hot, you get less mols of fuel per litre.

I use shell because I get money back off fuel with my points card, and use a cashback credit card so I get 3p in the pound back (about 5p off a litre).

Filled my friends Mini up at a Jet garage once, about 0.5 miles from the forecourt it died and wouldn't work again til we drained it and changed to a different fuel lol (an no he didn't put diesel in)

When I had my 1.8t golf I put vpower nitro plus in everytime I can honestly say I know you pay more but it's worth it very worth it and I did a test I used normal 95 fuel for a while then changed the fuel filter pretty dirty to be honest then I used 97 v power and hey hoo alot cleaner and alot more mpg :)

I'm going with guy and say its bullshit for now. These sort of stories fly around all the time. I can imagine supermarket fuel being less 'consistent' than garage fuel as I'd imagine they buy from many suppliers (the cheapest at the time) but that's purely speculation on my part. Personally I don't like to give any money to supermarkets at all unless forced to, and I'm certainly not handing over 30 queens heads to them each week. I'll stick to getting ripped of at esso.

And diesel isn't less refined as such, it's a different fraction of crude oil and so has a higher boiling point. You'd still need to remove impurities before putting it through a modern motor. However, I wouldn't be surprised that a bad batch may cause damage to a modern engine, they seem to be more 'picky' than older engines as a way of making then more efficient.

And I'm still confused about how people claim a carbed engine can run better on higher RON rated fuels. An increase in RON rating basically means a greater resistance to knock. Unless you have a knock sensor and electronic ignition, how will your engine 'know' and alter the spark advance? Maybe I'm missing something
