Took my mark 7 polo (2006) to kwik-fit for a free brake and exhaust check to be told I need a part replacing in my exhaust as well as other brake repairs, however with the new exhaust part I've noticed a hollow type sound coming from the exhaust when I put revs on, its pretty annoying and doesn't sound nice either, don't know what it is.. will it sort itself out in time? I took it back into kwik-fit and they said as its a new part it needs carbon adding to it, but that sounds like bullshit.

what do you think?

P.S. not taking the car there again robbing bellends charged me £279 for all the work wish I got a second opinion now.

You need to be a little more specific on the work done for you. Perhaps the receipt provided will provide details of the work carried out. Reading in between the lines, I suspect you've had a section of exhaust changed ?middle.

The exhaust note will change for a number of reasons - the replaced part will be clean, of a different metal thickness (especially if replacing an original part with aftermarket), and you need to check for leaks at the join of the new section (turn car on, let idle, look underneath car for dripping water or hot exhaust gasses escaping from joins).

May I suggest you transcribe your receipt and post a few photos?

It sounds like they've fobbed you out..

Where the noise coming from? Get a mate to rev the car slowly, and see if you can hear it if you lie underneath it/next to it..

I assumed it was the shoes as there was a loud squeak when I was braking, which has gone now

the exshaust doesnt make a noise till about 25k+ Revs, multiple people say it sounds like its blowing however i've taking it back twice now and theyve said its not blowing... and showed me underneith the car.

I cant really describe the noise other than a loud hollow/rattle sound, which you can hear in the car and outside when I'm driving.

if this still isnt any help I'm going to upload a video and take a few pictures.

A video would be your best bet mate give us a real idea. U could always stick you hand ove the tail pipe while the car is running there should be a small leak as there is a small drain hole in the back box but other that that there should be a lot of pressure to hold back.

As for brake shoes the most likely have done you there mate. They probably just needed cleaning up de dust de glazing adjusting back up maybe a bit of copper slip behind the contacts points. I have a 160000 mile van and i have only just needed to replace the shoes.

Seriously, internet diagnosis is not going anywhere on this one. May I suggest taking your car to another garage and getting another opinion?

This may provide the least amount of headache for you. Kwik fit exhaust installs are covered by a 2 year guarantee too. It may be worth taking the car to another kwik-fit branch elsewhere for a repeat 'free' check and getting them to look at it but do not mention the work done.

Any remedial work would then be covered by their own guarantee.

(Did they check if the heatshield was rattling?)

I was thinking about taking it to another kwik-fit garage see what they have to say and if there is dodgy work done, complain as much as I can haha, I checked if the heatshield was rattling but it doesnt seem to be.

Kwik-Fit exhausts - now with added carbon!

Lolz.. actually, there's something in it..

Carbon build-up helps to muffle an exhaust, at least until it fractures/fails and you have a leak. Then a new exhaust will naturally sound a touch more 'hollow' being like an empty room. So whilst they do talk utter shyte, there is at least a point in what they're saying.

Thing is though, there shouldn't be that much carbon, it's a very modern engine and should be very clean, i'd get it checked out to ensure it's running right. Heavy foot will do it, of course.

Problem solved took it to Kwik-Fit made them change it and its sounds perfect again!

i would have gone to the vw dealer to find out whats wrong with it and then get a mechanics that can do it in his spare time because they will allways charge less
