Private reg number

Featured Replies

Hi, I brought a car with a private reg number, the bloke said I can have the reg so I've brought the car. Is there any paper work needed to say this reg belongs to your car? As I've brought the car does this mean the reg is mine and I can apply to use it on another car?

From what I've read as long as the V5 is in your name and you have a receipt to prove you brought the car with the reg on it (which I do) the reg is now mine. The last owner brought the car with the reg on it himself.

It's abit of a grey area, any help would be great

Yeah same with my mums the reg comes with the v5 and if you want to put it on another car you pay DVLA eighty ish transfer few and fill in paper work. You need to take MOT certificate (in date one) V5, tax disc and proof of insurance for BOTH vehicles (one plate is on and one it's going to)

Takes a few weeks for conformation and V5's to come through but they should give you all new tax disc MOT etc there and then to out on both cars

Hope this helps

Cheers mate that's a great help, confirms what I though. I wanted to ask as its a very grey area on the net as most people buy a car with a private plate and the previous owner wants to keep it lol

Thanks for your help

Did you know though, if you buy a car with a private reg and the previous keeper has been lazy and says he wants the plate back, once you are in possession of the log book with the private reg, you are legally entitled to that reg.

So if your selling, take your plate off first !!!
