Ok first off I'm not 100% sure this should be here or the Mk3 project thread, most of this will probably be asking for advice, thanks in advance.

Engines - Will go on and on if servicing has been followed. Sometimes valve stem oil seals can start leaking at high miles. leaks from the rocker cover gasket,sump gasket headgasket (above the alternator) and camshaft oil seal are all fairly common (hopefully there arent many engines out there with them all!) The oil leak from the alternator can also cause premature alternator death.

I've just picked up a Polo 6n 1.4 APQ engine with just under 80k on the clock, I was checking the state of filters and stuff to do a service and it looks like there's oil seeping from behind the bolts on the rocker cover? Is this an easy fix?

I've not got a full history for the car book has a stamp at 25k done in 2003 and then 78K done last week :) timing belt was changed in between those times.

From the MOT's I've got it's only done 1400 miles in the last three years.......

It drives nicely enough, well for the week I've had it.


My plan, in order, is to do:

• sort this leak
• any remaining filters
• brakes (got an adversity on the last MOT)
• exhaust (as above, slight crack in it I haven't been able to tell
• and if it's still there a slight whistle I get when doing 60 ----------- unless this is more urgent

And advice on what to do to keep / get my my car in good condition would be great! Never had a VW but apart from the bizarre gear box for selecting reverse I've no complaints.

Rocker cover gaskets do go on these, piece of piss to change. The two or three Allen key/ torx bolts you see (can't remember which they are) undo them and it will lift off with the seal, peel seal off fit new seal and bolts seals (have little seals themselves) and put done.

Also gearboxes on these are like chocolate so not surprising you have a issue with it I'm afraid

The gearbox isn't an issue just weird to push down to get reverse it's usually just been far off to the side or lift.

Do I need to change the gasket as well or just the seals on the bolts? Should probably fess up that I'm a bit (complete) novice when it comes to proper bits of the car. The electrics I'm not so bad with but thought it was time I started doing some work myself rather than chuck money at the garage for quick jobs.

The timing belt and water pump however I think will be getting done in a garage, at least this time.



As far as moving I've actually got a mk4 (6n 1999) but I'm not sure if it qualifies as a build. There will be pics but probably "what is this?", "should this be here?" and "I hope this isn't important, it broke"

Usually when you buy a rocker gasket you get the bolt seals with it I'm unsure if you can just buy the bolt seals or not.

I will move it to a build thread for you then you can add to it as you go along. It's always handy to search the forum before asking as its probably already been covered and will hopefully help you find a answer, if not just post up a question in the relevant area

Right fixing is under way.

Fixed the radio, and cleaned the throttle body but still stalling so had a look at breather pipe and clogged full of the weird 'mayo' stuff. So quick trip to VW and I have a shiny new pipe.

I'm hoping this solves the stalling problem..... but I have run into a little problem.

How do you remove the pipe it looks like there's a pipe fitting so some kind does it unclip? or do I need to removed the box the pipe is attached to first like the link in the FAQ?


Edit: After reeding arpund I think the oil leaking I've seem is because the pipe currently in is blocked and collapsed, the pressure has to go somewhere,
