Insurance Help 17Yr Old

Featured Replies

Hi guys i passed my test in april and basicly got an insurance quote for 3000 miles a year for 2 and abit grand on a 1.4 polo, now i go to college which is far and other travels and inevidably iv gone over this limit and the insurance company is now saying its going to cost another 4 grand to insure till next year, which as I'm sure you can understand is ridiculous and impossible for a 17 yr old to afford,

I was wondering if their is anoyone out there with some infromation or advice with insurance on my polo (1999 model)

I am in dire need and its affecting my job my college and anything I'm planning to do in the near future, i am 18 in jan so after that maybe it would be abit easier for insurance i have looked around and that seems to be the casse but i was wondering if anyone has had any dealings with insurance for a 17 yr old first year driver. the car is my own under my name.

thanks guys

any help welcome

When you took out the policy you currently have did your insurer request an odometer reading and proof of such via an MOT etc? If not, then realistically how are they to know if you have or have not

I'm not 17 and wasn't driving when I was but my advice would be to try a price comparison site, or better still try a company like insure the box.

They instal a box into your car to monitor your driving and can (as I've been told) drop your insurance a great deal. That's assuming you drive carefuly and such, I'm in no way saying you don't already btw

My first years driving i had a black box installed, some of them vary though as i was insured with the coop and they monitor everything e.g how hard your corner, acceleration etc. At the end of every three months they will review how you've been driving, if you do good they'll give you money back. I think i had about £300 given back to me!

It is a pain though if you want to drive at night either you can't or very limited to, and most of all they don't allow any modifications.

My first years insured on a 1.0 6n was £1,250

second year without a blackbox with mods declared is £640

@andrew

Are black boxes limited to newer drivers or anything, the reason I ask is say for example you were a 30year old but say had a box installed to save money on your insurance I'm sure you wouldn't be impressed at not being able to drive when you wanted.

I know the answer would be not to get one fitted if you don't like the restrictions, just curious as my gf is considering one to build up her no claims

It's all down to the car too, a 1.4 is pretty nippy for a 17 year old, that will be the way they see it!

Maybe try going third party fire and theft if that's an option for you? :)

i was insured with the coop and i think the age restrictions are from 17 - 25 yr olds. But i think there all the same really

I'm 17 as well and insured a month ago with diamond via moneysupermarket. 1.4 6n2 all mods declared coilover alloys full exhaust change include outlet mani interior changes and they quoted me 2300 which is what I paided. for 9000 miles. So try them

Also put my parents as named drivers which brought it down but I'm still main driver

With no box

Cheers Andrew she's 26 so proberbly not an option for her, serves her right for giving up her 1.2 lol

If not, then realistically how are they to know if you have or have not done 3000 miles since taking out the policy?

Also I don't condone insurance fraud but isn't the mileage figure you give an average figure? So to make a 3000mile average then at some point you will go over that.

TBH, you have been a little bit silly and now you have told your insurer you can't go back on it. That will be why they quoted you a stupid amount. They have you over a barrel, cancel and you look to loose most of the £2000 you initially paid and have the additional cost of a new better suited policy. Stay with them and you need to shell out an extra £4000.

One thing you could do is phone them back and ask if you put your parents or some older family member on the car if that will make it cheaper. I found when I was younger putting a girl the same age as you on the policy makes it cheaper, may have changed now though, been a long time since I was 17.

The first price you got was stupid enough without the £4k on top, do they think you're going to write the car off ten times over with the extra miles?

Hi,

Feel free to give us a try if you like. If you wanted to PM me your details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

Regards,

Dan.

When i passed i drove my brothers car for a year, 1.4 6n. the only way to afford that was by going on as a named driver and having as many other people on the insurance as possible. Mind you, i was still paying over £3,000.

After my first year i bought my own car and i now pay £2,200 insurance on a 1.0l 6n2!

Its criminal but theres no real way of dropping the insurance...

This.

All depends on what your postcode is, and also driving a Polo is bad for insurance as they are a "high risk" car (eg. driven by lots of young people, easy to steal etc etc.)

Try looking at something bigger which isn't liked by young people so much? I got insured on a Focus estate for a lot less than my old Polo... and at the end of the day its a car that might be shit, but its still a car.

Oi, focus's are cracking cars, my parents 1.6 is on 200k and still going strong, only had its original clutch changed at 180k!

At 17 the day I passed my test my polo was £250 for 3months on the insurance. As a named driver. 3months after I paid 1200 for my bug, in my own name.

At 18 I got insured back on the polo at 900 as a named driver.

Now I'm 19, with 0 nbc I paided 700 for my current policy on my Jetta, in my name, I was please as punch with that.

It's all about shopping around, adding you parents, especially your mam, or any woman.

Though adding my father too bought my policy down by £400!

I use quotezone.co.uk

And my current insurer is elephant, maybe give them ago!

I'm 17 and I'm looking for cheap insurance aswell but on a 1.0l 98 polo. The cheapest learner driver quote i got was £645 and then i put both of my parents on and it went up to about 800
