1977 Mk1 Polo

Featured Replies

So i've bought myself a mk1, mainly due to deciding to continue to use my 91 coupe daily as its working reliably/practically and i fancy decking something older with the coilies i had on my coupe ;)

I bought it off James McCafferey (owns the cream mk1 polo for those that don't know) as he decided he didn't need 5 cars and was no longer going to convert this into a berg cup racer. He bought it as a shell essentially so all the parts, including the glass, that were included were spares from various mk1's he has owned, so its a bit of a frankenstein

- it's 1977 LS so pre-facelift

- has a 1093cc 4 speed engine that doesn't currently run

- originally metallic blue but 2/3rds rattle canned satin blue

- has had the two passenger side arches chopped in preparation for berg cup arches which i will now have to replace

- will be running facelift plastic bumpers and grill

- it is 98% solid which is great for a 36 year old car, just one or two little unimportant bits

Plans are:

- fit my modified mk1 golf coilovers that i removed from my coupe for insurance purposes

- fit my banded steels i had lying around, will probably change them at some point maybe even before it sees the road

- refit all of the parts included that were in the car when i got it

- source some of the missing parts (not alot missing)

- replace the front passenger wing and have rear quarter repair panel welded in

- see if the 1093cc engine will run, if not its not a great loss

- keep the tatty paint, I'm not going all show car, i like how it shows its age and has a bit of patina (like an old beetle-esque kind of look)

- get in on the road before the summer next year, i'm in no rush

i've ordered a few bits like a rear arch repair panel, arb blocks, engine mount spacers, short coilover helper springs and i've also got a front passenger wing being dropped off at my house later today :D

anyone know how the late grill and bumpers are attached to an early car? doesn't seem to line up with holes etc...

That was half way through, had any holes welded up in the floorpan and going to get the arches rolled and then sort the filler around the arch repair panel this week
