Evening chaps,

I'm in the market for a new little daily ride, because i'm bored with my current one.

I've found a very tidy, low milage mk2f/mk3 polo coupe local to me, with (I think) a 1.3l engine and 5 speed box - on a 93 plate.

I'm just wanting to know if this will be a carb'd, or injection engine? I'd really prefer the latter. Am I right in thinking that the later 1.3's were spi, and the GT's were mpi?

I've tried a search on here and elsewhere, but my google-fu isn't great today.

What are they like to live with on the motorway?

I don't use it often, but once a month I do a 100 mile trip up the A1.

Good motors should do 100 miles easily. Check for rust on sills, jacking points and all arches. Check for rusty filler neck and porous fuel tanks. Also check battery tray and drivers floor for water ingress I have seen some low mileage mk3 s with big holes behind battery tray. Check around front windscreen and rear quarters for rusting also.

Check for when Cambelt was last changed should have been done along with water pump every 60k.

I love these cars on the motorway! My 1.3 SPI Mk2f cruises lovely and quiet at 70 with plenty of umph for flying up hills or overtaking idiots who accelerate when you come up to pass them. I bought the car in Berkshire in August and drove 300+ miles back to Newcastle no bother, and have had a couple more long runs out since. Hopefully you'll get a good one too! Just do your usual pre-flight checks before you set off (oil, water, etc.) and enjoy the ride!
