So looking at this year’s MOT it was when the tester said that I had completed 500 in 5 years that I thought I really don’t use my mk1 enough and this being such a special car it deserves to be driven and enjoyed, so with two minds I have to say it’s up for sale.

This is my 1979 Mk1 Polo N. Although it is a 79 it was lucky enough to be the pre-face lift so as a result you get the earlier dash, earlier grill and lights and probably the coolest seat belts I've seen (pics below).

The car has 12,800 miles on the clock, and yes that’s right that mileage is genuine. Although it has been garaged all of its life it has been driven and I have tax discs dating back to 1979.

History of the car was it was bought by a couple, the husband died and so the wife learnt to drive and continued to use the car, when she passed away their daughter sold the house and the car was in the garage so that’s how I have it. Its two owners but on paper its three as the wife had to change names when her husband died.

Ok so onto the car. It’s a Mandarin Orange Polo N. The N stands for ‘nothing’, so that’s what the car came with. Lol But this means that the dash was never cut to fit a radio, nor were the door cards for speakers. It has a single drivers side mirror (apparently they didn’t tick the option for duel mirrors). It terms of the body it has never been in an accident so all the panel gaps are true, and the doors haven’t dropped and close with a reassuring clunk (try it yourself, you’ll know what I mean).

It did have a couple of little marks when I bought it so I had the bumpers straightened and re-chromed, and paint to only the areas that required.

The engine is clean, and even has the plastic from the factory over the dissy cap. (cue pic of engine bay)

The interior is spotless, and has the low back houndstooth (black and white) cloth. I don’t think anyone sat on the rear bench before I had it.

The car had apparently never been on a motorway and this is clear to see as the front screen looks brand new, not chips or marks. The rubber around the windows is moss free (is been garaged so that’s to be expected).

I have done a couple of mods but stuck to the bolt on/bolt off variety. I have a set of Porsche Cookie Cutters, these are the early 911 types so 6” wide as appose to the more common 7”, a set of adaptors (4x100 to 5x130) and coilovers. The wheels actually have new rubber on them, with the only distance on them the return journey to Edition 38 around 300 miles.

With the coilovers it was tricky to get things to fit but no shortcuts were taken, I actually had spacers made up for me to ensure that everything was correct.

I have the original wheels and suspension and you get all these too as well as loads of little bits that I've either spent the last few years searching like the original under dash tray or stuff I managed to get with the car (like the original dealer tax disc holder).

So there you have it, an uber clean Mk1 Polo. I think this must be the lowest or at least one of the lowest mileage mk1’s out there. It is a beautiful car and driving around you get attention from all sorts, be prepared to talk to strangers in petrol stations.

With the condition it is in you could make it into a concourse car or scrap that idea and drop a g40 into it and mod it…I didn’t have the heart to do that but ‘The choice is yours’. It came second place at Edition38 2013 so it has had a nod of approval from those in the know.

As a sweetener you also get the houndtooth dice and the hat

This is my dream car I want one so bad one day I will have one but never one like this so perfect Id buy it in a second and appreciate it so much iv just brought a house tho so although I have a lovely big garage to put it in I can't afford it :( hope it goes to a lovely home mate good luck with the sale

You beat me to this by an hour all those years ago when you first bought it. Always hoped i would be in a position to buy this when it sold but sadly i don't have anywhere to keep such a car.
