It's been a while since I've posted on here, so hello again.

My MK2 has had some suspension/ steering niggles for a while now. There has been about 10mm play in the steering wheel. Most recently though I have noticed a pronounced 'knock' or 'clonk' when turning the steering wheel in either direction. The steering rack was noticed to be wanting by the last MOT man.

Does this sound like it's the rack? Or could it be suspension? Worth mentioning I think one of the shocks is on the way out.

Any opinions valued.

Track rod ends possibly? :S

I've seen a fair few steering racks wear out, if you turn the wheel full lock right, then under the bonnet grab the end of the rack where the inboard track rod ends bolt to the rack and give it a good wiggle. Any play at all is not great.

Replacing the rack on a mk2 isn't too much of a hardship though, I recall buying an excange from GSF many moons ago.

Check inner steering bushes too

All though a ball joint or the rack might be more prone to knock

It could be the cv joints if its when turning whilst moving

I've heard of cvs making noise like this before, have you had or heard of cvs failing a lot?

track rod ends are a nightmare when the previious owner tried doing them they dint put any nuts onit the just wound the rod end completely on and I carnt get it off

My 1991 gt just failed MoT on lower joint on hub. Pinch bolt would not take up slack. Number 13 on the diagram, lowest joint at the bottom. Major clunking noise.
