6n. no spark at plugs or from coil.

Featured Replies

Hi all, hopefully this is posted in the right place and I can get some help with my frustrating problem.

Car: 1999 s reg 1.0 polo, 6n I believe.

Problem: car died for no reason while driving. Not gone through any puddles, hit any potholes or anything.

I checked the electrics and there is no spark from the plugs. I then checked the coil and there was no spark or power coming from there either... soooooo I changed,

Spark plugs x 4

New ht leads

Distributor cap

Rotor arm

And coil.

Fitted them all and..... nothing. Still no spark or power from the coil.

Highly dissapointed I started to look around for other solutions and couldnt find much and what I could find didnt really help at all.

I did manage to test to see if there is 12v going into the coil and there is but I have no clue where to go from there.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thank you.

hi, i dont think that there is an immobiliser in the car. there is a self fitted alarm/central locking.

the engine is turning from the starter motor, the dizzy rotor is moving round too when i crank the engine.

here is a list of things i have checked,

fuses, engine bay fusebox and internal fuse box, all good, no dead fuses.

ground from coil case to engine, no problem,

checked positive wire from ignition to coil +, there is 12v going to it with ignition on.

i dont know how to test if the coil (new) is knackered, but i wouldnt rule it out.

My polo 6n has immobileser, I think they all got it, at least you know the starter motor and ignition switch work.

If you take the 2 screws out underneath the steering coloum, take the under cover off under the wheel, you will see the front the ignition barrel immobiler wire coming from the front of barrel, at the back is ignition switch wires.

becarefull playing under there with airbag. when I play electrics under there I disconnect the battery.

Also could get a vw obd2 diagnostic scanner for error codes, from ebay for about £15, look on line for error code meanings. you plug that in above the fusebox under the steering wheel.

Could try cleaning the distributor and connections with wd40 but make sure it drys before you put it back in.

But i remember once a faulty tempreture senor wasnt alowing my car to start, I replaced that it started. very common problem with vw polos, if it were me, I would play with tempsensor first, cost about £10.

i used this link

Hope this list of errors could help

Thanks for your advice. Have pulled the temp sensor and tested it, seems to be ok. The ohms drop when added to hot water and raise once taken out. I have noticed during my tests that I'm not getting any pulse from the negative side of the coil with the engine runnig. So I can assume that either hall sensor or ecu are at fault. I have not chased the wires back from ecu to hall sensor to see if there is a pulse before the ecu. There is however volts going to the hall sensor from the ecu. Once I have a haynes. Possibly tommorrow I will be able to use the schematics for further testing.

If the sensors give wrong reading to ECU, the ECU will think its dangerous to let the engine turn on.
