does anyone know is power steering has been fitted to a polo coupe

pretty sure a few years back it was discussed using parts from a corsa iirc but why would you need it? they are light anyway?

The electric corsa rack is a fairly common mod with the auto testing fraternity.

Not sure how tunable they are in the sense of efforts/levels of assistance with conditions (speed etc)

friend of mine just installed corsa power steering on his pickup truck and it works pretty well!

I'd imagine the system need steer angle, vehicle speed etc for the ECU to dictate levels of assistance etc.

I found you can buy a kit to fit to the corsa system which is just an adjustment knob to adjust level of assistance, but obviously this won't adapt with speed.

Need to look into it but didn't know if I'd be better modifying a polo column or making a corsa column or whatever fit the polo instead.

Probably won't do it, but my steering low speed is pretty annoyingly heavy

Seriously - I'm not huge and I used to have a transit van with no power steering. It was a bit of a pain getting backing a trailer into a tight spot, but it wasn't so bad.

Yes I have had various setups and always has been the case really. Even changed racks etc.

300mm wheel possibly doesn't help.

It's fine and manageable, I like to do stuff just to learn shit and see how it turns out, would be something different to a 60/40 TA kit and some mini wheels that's all haha

The EPAS set ups are a popular conversion for mantas, mk1/2 escorts and many other retro/classic cars. They generally use a nob to control sensitivity rather than a ecu. This obviously takes away the systems ability to adjust sensitivity with speed, so it's just a case of setting it where it's not too light at speeds, but not too heavy when parking. Basically it just takes it back to the more old school PAS set ups where it was run off the engine and had a constant level of assistance, but with a level of adjustability.

Yeah I've done some reading now and Corsa B for example is pretty crude,

Basically has 3 assistance levels, something like 0-10mph, 10-45 & 45+ so it's ECU needs an input for speed & engine RPM, which can be done just need to be setup so your tyre size and ABS sensor choice ties up with that of the Corsa... It's not really heavy don't get me wrong, it's been fine for years, just something to do and would make life easier :) Toby managed without it so hahah

It's not a case of it not being manageable, just a convenience thing.

Loads of old cars didn't have PAS, or electric Windows, or ABS or traction control, or electric handbrakes, keyless entry, no ignition barrel, auto open/close boots. Everyone managed then yet it's still on cars today, because it makes life easier, it's nice to have, which is why id like it.

If anyone has anything helpful or constructive to say that's be appreciated, if not don't waste your time replying lol.

I don't recall anyone actually doing this on a polo anyway, whenever has been asked in the past it went as far as "other people use a corsa column" I'm yet to see a polo with it done but yeah.

How do you check the top mount smooth running ?

Well I have checked mine for friction/resistance when jacked up and when at the correct ride heights on turn-plates so there is no drag of the tyres.

I have also had a similar level of resistance with 3-4 different sets of top mounts etc, only time its lighter is when the wheel alignment is massively out.

But thats just me

could just use a speed sensor to change the settings. like how the corrado rear spoiler comes up at 40mph, or even better the GALA system on vws. cant imagine it would be too difficult to rig up even as a bodge.

Yeah, well to retain the standard vauxhall ECU, that takes inputs from the ABS sensors and engine speed, however Polo's tyre size is different to that of a Corsa, and if I were to fit an ABS sensor as a speed reference I would have to consider how many 'teeth' there are on the Corsa sensors... or I could use any amount of teeth and whatever size tyre I want then you can make up a small circuit to adjust it accordingly to suit.

We shall see anyway, can't be bothered at the minute

Nick: there is a electric steering rally setup, all tunable,has an ECU with steering wheel sensors and speed sensors.

From memory it was about £1000+ 5 years ago.

I belive Demon Tweaks had it in their catalogue.

Don't forget your 2F does have a the Gala speed output signal from the speedo :)
