Basically I'm completely confused over this, i have a 26 year old MK1 and have taken out Road Side Relay with the AA @ £72.40 for the year..

Meaning they will pick me up and if they "can't" fix it they'll drop me off wherever i want to be dropped (with the car) the reason i went for this option was purely because if my car does break down (i'd be suprised) i probably wont be able to afford being charged by some local garage as I'm a student and i have mates who will do it for free back at home so the £70 a year doesnt seem to bad for the cover I'm getting..

What i want to know and what completely confuses me is what the fuck do or can they actually fix?

I mean, is there a limit? essentially other than the "pick my car up and drop it where i want" service I'm paying for, as far as I'm led to believe all they'll do is recharge my battery if it dies, or retighten some bolts if they are loose..

Could someone enlighten me as to what they "can" actually do with regards to fixing your car..?

Most of the time they will send an AA patrol that is a mechanic to fix your car so as said start car, change wheel, change alternator/starter motor, new hoses etc etc anything that can be fixed or a temporary fix. May include taking you to a garage to get parts i.e. new exhaust

Usually fix 8 out of 10 cars unless major failure i.e. cambelt

I thought the same bout the RAC cover that I bought and didnt use for 2 years!!

But then snapped a gear linkage 10 miles from home.... they got me and my car home within an hour of breaking down.

Bout three weeks later, a fuel line gave up the ghost and again they were out to it and completely sorted the problem (No temp fix) within bout 90 mins!!!

I'd say that you may never use it and begrudge paying out every year but you can garantee that when you really need it, you will be glad you did......

They can usually save you a massive ball-ache

AA website are doing deal atm, £72.40 a year for any vechile, road side cover.. and they will tow you and your car back to wherever u want. which is handy..

The thing it's really worth having it for is the times when you can't sort things out yourself. Last time I called them out I was on a bridge on a dual carriageway with 70 mile an hour traffic coming round a corner, seeing me and swerving round me. It was just a hose come off my polos fuel pump, and I could have fixed it easily enough, but I couldn't get out of the car to sort it.
