SID's Reef 6n.

Featured Replies

Been a member on here for a while now and always enjoy reading through the build threads so thought I'd start one of my own.

Had the polo for a while, most of the common mods already done.

Lowered

6n2 rears (smoked)

6n2 interior

16v bumpers

16v fogs

Debadged grill

Smoked headlights

Clear/smoked indicators

Clear/smoked side repeaters

Wind deflectors

Wiper delete

De badged tailgate

Tints

Bump strips removed

blah blah blah..

The paint on the car had dings and scratches all over and was a bit bored of the color....so this week decided on a change (quite a big one).

Anyway, a few pics of how the car looked at the beginning of this week

  • The pedal box already went on this a while back, whipped it all out and welded it up so should never go again. (not a fun job working in the footwell!) Funnily enough though, this happened in practic

  • The one i have doesn't have a SIM slot, but supports a 3G Dongle, and also has Wifi for those romantic McDonalds car park meals.

So, me and a mate got cracking a few days ago:

There he is, pretending to help:

Picked up a couple of new front wings from a nice lad on here (buzzin, cheers mate)

There were a few dings in them but got then sanded and filled nicely, ready for this:

Got hold of a standard grill from the same member mentioned above, painted the VW innards and had a crack at wrapping the VW logo in some left over leather, never seen this done so wasn't sure what it'd come out like but i'm quite pleased:

Finished work last night and went straight back down to the garage....paint on the roof came out wank so sanded this down again and gave it another coat.

Set about filling the water channels below the rear lights and a little dent on the bootlid, then got it all masked up ready to paint.

Bootlid and rear quarter got a few coats.

Hopefully get the rest of the body painted up over the weekend, can then start putting her back together.

Is it easy getting the aerial out? Have you just used filler or welded it?

  • Author

Straight forward to remove the aerial mate.

Unclip the headlining, there's a bolt on the underside holding it to the roof, remove this and it'll just come off.

the hole left is just a bit smaller than a 2p piece so it's not too bad, I just filled it tbh mate with a square of plastic on the underside.

Would probably be best to weld it because filler tends to crack. Looking forward to seeing this finished.

  • Author

It'll probably end up welded up at some point tbh, we'll see how the filler holds out for now.

Not much done today with finishing work late, door shuts got a paint:

Also ordered some pressed plates and a Mk4 Golf gear knob and gaiter from good old t'ebay to freshen it up when it goes back together.

Love the colour, how many cans did it take to do it

  • Author

Used about 13 cans of colour, was cutting it close thought tbh.

If you plan to do it i'd recommend 15-20 cans, and set aside LOTS of time!

Looks really good now its back together, could you tell me about spraying the bumpers? Got some 16v and wanted to know the best way to do it, there currently blue, want to get them to white

  • Author

Cheers man, it's quite easy to be honest, just take your time with them.

Make sure you sand them down plenty, should be no shiny bits by the time you're done. (no need to take all the colour layer off)

Give it a good wipe down with some panel wipe/wipes to get all the crap off before you paint.

Make sure you've got a nice warm/dry space to do it in.

If you're doing them using cans and you've never painted before I'd watch a few YouTube videos to learn the technique and practice on an old panel or something first.

Alright cheers :good:
