I am converting my genesis to a G40.

The car will remain largly genesis except the G40 engine box an assosiated bits.

I have sent off my V5 telling DVLA about the changes i.e. new engine and cc.

Does it still get called a genesis on the V5? as 70% of it is genesis and 20% is G40 and the other 10% on aftermarket suspension wheels exhaust etc

what do you have yours insured as?

a G40 conversion i.e genesis with g40 power plant?

or plain G40?

or plain genesis/whatever still?

any help appreciated

The car will come back as a Polo Genesis. The only thing that will be changed on the V5 is the engine number which should now begin PY. Theres no real way to register the car as something else once its been registered, the only exception might be when you fully re-shell a car.

Some insurance companies (Brentacre I know of) will sometimes insure a coversion under the car the engine came from, so in your case they might insure it as a G40 rather than Genesis G40 conversion. Its best to check with the insurer and where they stand on conversions really.

Yeah, thats usually the case, unless you can find an insurer willing to insure it as if it left the factory with the transplanted engine (They are usually few and far between).

I have heard insures treat gt/g40 conversions as a gt engine with modified internals and a supercharger added, think it was steve milos old car was insured this way.

Yep you can only change the engine number not the model. Only way for it to appear as a G40 on the model would be to buy a brand new un-registered shell from VAG.

Brentacre call my conversion a POLO CL G40 :-D

brentacre, HIC and flux will all usually insure the car as whatever it has become as has been commented.

so the rates will be for a g40

The good thing is.. you dont get completely bumraped with these companies becuase youre doing a conversion.... unlike SOME other insurers

Like you say i told mine it was a GT to G40 conversion with Adrian Flux (Highway)

The policy just has VW Polo G40 listed and nothing to do with the GT - Simply because they asked if i had completely used a G40 running gear and other associated parts (Lower Arms) - which they declared as being a G40 rather than a conversion.

I also insured my wheels, coilovers, bushes, exhaust, chip and toothies and induction to be on the safe side with £500 insurance on stereo equipment which i would use if it were to get knicked!

Got that lot at 20 Years Old 1 Year NCB and No Points/Convictions/Accidents for £1300 fully comp...

it's always cost me the same amount to insure my GT-G40 conversion as it would have if it was an original G40. That's always with specialist companies though.

It is possible to have cars reclassified as another model if you've totally converted the car to the spec of the other model. Apparently you have to get a letter of consent from VW though. I looked into it breifly for my GT-G40 but never bothered since it didn't make a difference to my insurance.

isn't the best way to insure a conversion done by going with an insurance company who will give you a set bhp limit regardless of what engine and running gear you are using. Which would help dropping in a G! i think it was brentace.

yeah Brentacre is who I am with. Although I only have my GT insured at the moment the G will be with them soon too when it's back on the road. they just do a bhp limit, other companies do it differently. Like always with insurance, it's just a case of phoning round seeing who's best.

I rang up brentacre and got a quote for a GT and he told me that if I converted it to a G40 it'd only cost me an extra £100 a year!
