after just one week of driving on a new rear wheel bearing, its completely destroyed and immobile.

it made a noise for a day before completely failing and locking the wheel up

i went and got another new bearing kit and tried to fit it but when i pulled at the drum it was stuck on

it seems as if the outer bearing has binded onto the shaft

would upload a pic but the car is ten miiles away :(

any advice at getting it off would be good

It has more than likely done some damage to the stub axle, if not you may damage the stub axle trying to get the bearing off.

I'd suggest just take off the stub (it's only 4 bolts) and replace with a new one, then a new bearing etc.

Sounds odd for a new bearing to fail - was it correctly packed with grease? Tightened up right? (Ie not really tight at all)

Did you clean out the old grease (full of failed metal pieces)?

Have you backed off the adjusters?

Did you torque the stub axle bolt correct? Could have been too tight.

it was packed with fresh grease so i guess it was the bolt , it wasn't on tight but he didn't use a torque wrench :/

I'm going to get the car now shall i still try and take it apart or simply go straight to the scrappy and get another stub instead?

and il get a trained mechanic to fit it this time :)

Sounds like you tightened it up a bit to much to me, easy mistake to make so don't beat your self up about it, best best is just get a new stub axle / drum from scrappies.

There is no torque setting for it iirc, it's a tapered bearing so it doesn't have to be that tight.

I always set them so the washer behind the nut is snug but can still be moved slightly with a screwy.

okay thanks hopefully be all sorted tomorrow and i definitely wont make the same mistake again!

I generally just let the weight of the spanner fall on it and turn to the next slot for the split pin kind of thing.

It's more of a thing to do by feel as apposed to a torque figure

I usually go by the 'gnat's cock' worth of play at the outer wheel rim. Tight is bad news for these taper rollers.
