Ryans 87 mk2 coupe s project

Featured Replies

hello all!!

just thought i would share with you my little project that i purchased from a guy that got in touch with me on here under the name yeti. He told me he had intentions of doing it himself but had too many projects ongoing so that is where i stepped up going in blind not knowing what could happen. i was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the bodywork and interior to say it had been sat for a few years on a trailer. I picked this little gem up in august of this year and started tinkering as soon as i got it to my garage.

it is a D reg 1987 vw coupe s believed to be one of the better ones built in Germany (or so i believe, correct me if i'm wrong).

completely standard with the hockenheim wheels.

i picked this up with no engine and have plans do put a 1.4 16v engine from the 6n model with honda cbr600 carb setup - this seems to be a good choice as seems as though quite a few people have done these conversion so its a tried and tested solution i believe.

did have intentions of buying lowering springs and shocks but going to bite the bullet and save up for some coilovers so i can change ride height if wanted.

I'm new to engines and I'm taking a big risk (I'm no mechanic, I'm an electrcian haha!!) so any help or good pointers would be greatly appreciated.

heres a few photos of where i started and where I'm at. i will try to keep everyone updated as i go and my progress

cheers guys

Right after buying my wheels i decided i wanted the car to be a gunmetal grey colour same as the centres of the wheels, i've found a paint colour i want that is used on the mk2 golf but cant for life of me remember the paint code this is the colour

I then decided that i wanted to spray the engine bay gloss black because I'm going for a chrome and red colour scheme for the bits and bobs in the engine and this where I'm at currently with it

Final update for the time being.

after working on the engine bay i decided to strip off the bits off of the rest of the car so i could started sanding for priming the whole car. i decided I'm going to vinyl wrap the outside of the car after i've primed it, just for the time being while i save up so i can get the respray done professionally as i don't think my amature skills are up for a full respray as of yet but this is where I'm up to

the guy i bought it from kindly gave me two doors in better condition than the ones on the car currently so i had a play and swapped them over

Good work.

(In my opinion, the original wheels are awesome! Are you gonna change them definitely?)

Yeah I'm gonna run the minilites and keep the hocks for the winter time etc

Sorry for the lack of updates guys had a lot on with work but since my last update I've purchased a 80/60 lowering kit and have fitted the rears but not managed to get around to doing the fronts yet but think I'll have a play at the weekend

Good project - my first polo was a gun metal grey polo coupe s lovely car and one of the best cars I've owned.

I can't wait to get all bodywork done then it's like 60% then it's engine play time

I've also started on giving the interior a freshen up, as i decided i wanted the car grey it would only make sense to spray the inside of the doors and i am very happy with how they've turned out.

this where I'm currently at with my little project, I'm having a knightmare getting the front suspension because of darned slotted nut but I've bitten the bullet and ordered the correct tool to do the job as the hammer and screwdriver option didnt work, once i have the suspension on i can get the car out of the garage and give it a good clean so i can carry on wrapping.

Looking good.

The castle nuts would have been done up with the right tool, so they'll be good and tight. If you can't get them off, worst case, just bring the struts back up sometime when I'm about and I'll buzz them off for you.

its update time again!! i finally got those slotted nuts off thank god so i gave the whole setup a bit of a freshen up, i started by hammeriting it all and freshening up the calipers with some tasteful red paint.

then as you can see i got it all on and turned out better than i originally thought, so then i decided to give the subframe a sprucen up.
