My (ex) pride and joy is up for sale. The reason being that I have done everything I wanted to do to it and insurance wont let me get away with an engine swap so i have moved onto a golf.

This is the ranger model which is 'rare' for all you cool cats. only 1500 made i think. But more importantly it is the sporty version. you get a whopping 1272cc mh engine and a 5 speed 8p gearbox. It has an original ranger interior which is even harder to come by. its like the scirocco interior with more bolster and lower seats. Ill let you see some pictures to wet your appetite.

For all you fresh drivers, this cost me an extra tenner to insure over my earlier 1litr version in my first year of driving!

please note that the steering wheel and boss in this picture aren't included. It will be a standard one.

It has plenty of mot, will check but something like 9 months and a couple of months tax (remind me to check if you are interested because those are guesses)

All modifications are done by me and are tasteful. There were some very questionable ones done by the previous owner but i have sorted her out. they are as follows. I may forget a few.

Lowered - 6n2 rear coilovers on the rear. room to go lower and plenty of room to go higher. 80mm ta technix lowering springs and uprated shocks on the front. I also have lowering top mounts to get 10mm extra on the front which i can include with the car. never fitted.

allycat wheels - original ones in 13x6.5j with reasonably good tyres. they have gone a bit dull from the recent wet weather but a bit of metal polish will bring them back up a treat. I wasn't bothered by it but it's good for you to know. I challenge you to try and see it in the pictures.

black leather look doorcards from a different interior and black leather headrests to tie it all in together

speedo has been adjusted to read the correct speed with the current wheels (smaller tyres than standard)

dash lights changed to yellow instead of the horrible green and the clock lcd inverted

dewipered rear and wired the horn to work off the rear wiper switch so you can fit any steering wheel you like

I have wired in an amp behind the glovebox and fitted an electric aerial that goes up and down when the radio is turned on/off. only average speakers included but sounded great with decent ones. dont worry, i didn't cut the parcel shelf up or anything.

has had smoked front indicator lenses (i have the orange ones still and some clear ones somewhere) and clear side repeaters. both with chrome bulbs (they make orange light) to make it look a bit smoother.

custom machined valve cover on the engine. still waiting to get it back from the guy doing the work. this may not be included in the price if it ends up costing me a bomb.

I have fitted a weber 32/34dmtl carb with manual choke. Swirl pot attached to the bulkhead and plumbed in correctly. this has not been rejetted but I actually have been getting better than my peirburg economy from it and it pulls very well with it on. completely changes the car. the engine has been replaced from the original and has less miles but I don't know how many. It will have a brand new head gasket and cambelt before you buy it and an oil change so thats a lot less to worry about.

side exit cherry bomb exhaust - you wont get away with running it with the car as low as it is unfortunately

lots of bits and pieces. plastic trim bits. small engine parts etc. I have had a few mk2 polos and its my whole collection since i have moved onto golfs

a complete spare old man spec interior if wanted

I have a complete spare ignition system. Ignition amp, coil, distributor with rotor arm and cap, ht leads and a fuel pump that i keep in the boot. They are the only things that will go wrong so you will never get stranded.

the front coilovers from the 6n2 set. the mount is destroyed but the spring is all good. i was going to use them to make my own coilovers for the front but the ride from the ta technix kit is spot on so never bothered.

the doors have rust at the bottom. you can see in the pictures. the bottom of them is pretty non existent but you will never see that and it doesn't let water into the car, just drains it straight outside. easy and cheap fix... buy some new doors. again, I wasn't used and it really isnt a problem.

sunroof leaks. It just needs the tangs bending down a bit and I will do that but as i wont be driving it i cant guarantee it to be perfect. on my half hour journey to work i get about 1 or 2 drips when its raining so again something i haven't bothered to fix.

the seats have been fixed a couple of times with some interesting technique but not really that noticeable because of the pattern - i have 2 spare headrests with the same material so you could have a go if you wanted to do it better.

There is a coupe of chips in the windscreen, passenger side and i think still would pass the mot but i have a mint oem windscreen and its rubber seal that i am including.

front brake disks are very slightly warped and can be felt under very hard braking, but i am including other disks and pads with the car.

an engine with a shagged block (89,000 ish miles) but a decent head and cam that is on 65,000 ish miles that would be a good spare to have. the only thing with the engine is that if you want it, you take it all. you wont be able to take it in the polo when you pick it up though because the wheels will bottom out on the arches.

The mileage is a bit of a grey area. The shell has about 90,000 miles on it but when i got it the speedo was broken. I have previous mot's and worked out about when it broke and the guy before me was a idiot basically and it had a blown headgasket, a hole in the radiator that drained the coolant in about a minute and a hole in the petrol tank that started leaking after more than a fiver of petrol. He clearly didn't do many miles in it haha. all have since been replaced so my estimate should be within about 1-2000 miles which isn't too bad considering the clocks on most polos are probably out by that much from running smaller wheels. this has only had small wheels since i have owned it by the way. so, the engine I have no idea of the mileage. It is a good runner and i would say is about 60,000 ish but cant be sure. then there are the clocks, they read 22,000 under what the actual mileage is because of the broken speedo.

do you see the theme here. this car is 100% driveable but for the very nit picky people, i have all the parts to fix any minor issues. although to me they weren't a problem and I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't actually notice them. I'm just anal about my cars.

I have limited history with the car but I do have quite a few photos of its transformation from me and the previous owner. I have spent a lot of time fixing it and rebuilding the engine so I know everything is in good order. clutch has plenty of life in it etc

This is so much fun to drive. sounds awesome and goes round corners like a boss. If I have missed anyhting or you have any questions feel free to ask

edit: it is obvious that the bodywork isn't perfect on this but it is solid and roadworthy/passed MOT. There are some small shallow dints on the passenger wing/arch (hence all photos seem to be of the same side) but they are a prime candidate for the old hairdryer and compressed air trick. there have been some body repairs overs its life, probably by the old man who used to own it so some patches of very slightly different red etc. Tornado red is an extremely easy colour to do yourself but it didn't bother me and can hardly be noticed. (one of these patches should be visible in those photos but you cant see it) the bonnet is also a very slight shade different to the rest of the car but could be solved with a new one for £20 or so if you are bothered.

edit 2: the arches have been rolled. the fronts only mildly and only with a hammer but its not bumpy/creased or visible from the top/side. the backs have been pulled out by maybe an inch and a half or so and completely flattened on the inside. this has been done very delicately and looks stock but i can still get the wider wheels under them. you would never know and i can send close ups if required. I have seen some horrendous attempts by some people and i can assure you this looks great.

I dont think mileage really comes into it when buying an old car. I have had a very low mileage polo that was a complete rust bucket and deathtrap. This has had an engine rebuild and known good mechanics. fresh engine rebuild and etc. I could have just sold it as is and you would never know it wasn't a standard 72000 miler like some people probably would but I'm honest and i know it isn't an issue since i have basically rebuilt everything on this car from parts off a 65k mk2.

i am open to offers as i know the price for these range from 300 to 1500. But this is definitely better than ones you will get at the lower end of that and it has all the good features.
