This car really has been a labour of love. I bought my Classic Red K-reg MK3 CL in 2000. At the time I really wanted a G40 but being only 20 the insurance at the time was too much for me. For the first 6 months I was satisfied, but soon I started to get bored and after browsing various Veedub magazines and websites I found myself wanting to modify the car.

At first I started with just a set of 14 inch Audi 80 Ronal Alloy rims - and the bug slowly set in. I wanted to make the car a bit more different but lack of funds due to being a poor student made this hard.

I started with DIY cheep mods from scrap yards, always looking out for late spec models such as the Genesis, Boulevard, GT and the rare G40 for OEM+ parts.

In early 2003 I came across a chance find. Whilst in a breakers I was approached by someone who worked there who was selling a early MK2 squareback. It wasn't until he popped the bonnet that I realised it was running a full G40 conversion. I bought the car for £300, which although had all G40 running gear was much abused and the shell was beyond saving. I ran the car for a while and SORN it off the Road for a while to save up funds and formulate a project.

In late 2004 I got together with Matt Bennett who has been with club polo since it started and has a lot of experience in polo engine rebuilding. We both formulated a plan to use the G40 engine from the donor car and rebuilding it to its former glory in my Mk3. This involved stripping the engine and a ground up rebuild with all necessary parts replaced.

The project started in late 2004 and took nearly 6 months in total. We worked under a cover in Matts Garden in all weather and with the help of his other half Bells tea making skills eventually we got the G40 up and running in 2005.

And that's where the story ends at the moment. I have the G40 I've always wanted but rather than just buying one I've done it the hard way, but along the way I've learnt a lot about Veedubs smallest car and made many friends as well.

its the lower chin spoiler from a mk2 golf non GTI, cut to fit for the rear. I've ditched the rear one since, change in taste.
